Solomon's Temple 2?

 2 Sam 7

David wants to build God a house

  1. 2Sam 6, David brings the ark back to Jerusalem.

  1. Nathan originally tells David to do whatever is in his heart.

  1. But later that night God gives Nathan a dream, telling him that David is not to build a house.

  1. God continues and says if he wanted someone to build a house for him, he is capable of commanding them.

  1. He continues on by reminding David that He is the one to raise him up from being a shepherd to being the king of Israel

  1. He is the one who defeated David's enemies.

  1. He was the one who made David's name great.

This seemed to be a little bit of dress down of David by God because he seemed to be getting too big for his britches.

  1. He continues on telling Nathan that He will gives David rest from his enemies.

  1. So not only is David not to build a house but that God is going to build his own house after David's death.

  1. God continues and tells Nathan that he will build his own house which he will establish and it will last forever.

  1. And he won't take the house away from this person like he did with Saul.

  1. And if necessary, he will use the stripes of men and the rod of the children of men against him if needed.

  1. Might apply to Jesus carrying the sins of the world

  1. We found it is also mentioned in Psalms 89 where the offspring of Jesus will be chasened with the rod and with the stripes if they go off track. But that he won't abandon them.

  1. It would seem that the house will be built by whom?

I go to prepare a place for you…in John

  1. Although it seems fairly clear that God is referring to a future offspring in the line of David, David seems to think that this temple will be built by one of his sons.

  1. At this point Solomon isn't born yet. As a matter of fact Bath-Sheba isn't in the picture either.

1Ch 17:1-3

1 And it came to pass, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah dwelleth under curtains. 2 And Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thy heart; for God is with thee. 3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

2Sa 7:5-16

1Ch 17:4-14

5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

6 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

7 In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

8 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Israel;

9 and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

11 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.

12 When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

15 but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

16 And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith Jehovah, Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in:

***Not a question in this chapter. NO HOUSE!***

5 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel, unto this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another

6 In all places wherein I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people Israel:

8 and I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast gone, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

9 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the first,

10 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will subdue all thine enemies. Moreover I tell thee that Jehovah will build thee a house.

11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days are fulfilled that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will set up thy seed after thee, who shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

***When You Die…

  1. "I" will set up your seed who shall be of thy "sons"

Son - son, grandson, male child, member of a group, people

  1. "I" will establish his kingdom

12 He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever.

13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my lovingkindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee;

14 but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom for ever; and his throne shall be established for ever.

  1. "I will settle him in my house"

Different

  1. "His throne shall be established forever"

Vs

"Thy throne shall be established for ever"

1Ch 17:15-17

15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. 16 Then David the king went in, and sat before Jehovah; and he said, Who am I, O Jehovah God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far? 17 And this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; but thou hast spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Jehovah God

**vs17 Does David suggest that his own house and God's servants house are connected?

1Ch 17:18-23

18 What can David say yet more unto thee concerning the honor which is done to thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant. 19 O Jehovah, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20 O Jehovah, there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, to make thee a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou redeemedst out of Egypt? 22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, Jehovah, becamest their God. 23 And now, O Jehovah, let the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, be established for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.

Vs23 Does David think that…

  1. Thy servant

And

  1. Thy house

are reference to him and his house?

1Ch 17:24-

24 And let thy name be established and magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and the house of David thy servant is established before thee. 25 For thou, O my God, hast revealed to thy servant that thou wilt build him a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray before thee. 26 And now, O Jehovah, thou art God, and hast promised this good thing unto thy servant: 27 and now it hath pleased thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Jehovah, hast blessed, and it is blessed for ever.

  1. Vs24 Yes, David does think that he is "thy servant".

  1. Vs25 and he does think that God will build him a house.

  1. But David doesn't realize that the forever house is not an earthly house. It is a spiritual house built by Christ. If he had, he probably wouldn't have told his son Solomon to do what we read next.

Scholars think that Solomon was between ages 14 and 24 when these verses were written…

1Ch 22:5-19

5 And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for Jehovah must be exceeding magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death. 6 Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build a house for Jehovah, the God of Israel.

  1. Huh? What changed?

  1. David has assumes that it is his son who will build the house.

  1. And David has determined that Solomon is the son that has been tasked with building the house.

  1. David has determined that it is his job to gather as many supplies as possible for Solomon in order to help build it.

  1. God said that he would establish his throne after David's death.

  1. Never made mention of needing David's assistance.

So what has changed?

1Ch 22:7-10

7 And David said to Solomon his son, As for me, it was in my heart to build a house unto the name of Jehovah my God. 8 But the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build a house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. 9 Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. 10 He shall build a house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.

  1. Vs8 When did verse 8 and 9 happen? We just finished reading two instances where God speaks about his house and who shall build it.

  1. There is no record of God speaking to David and saying these things. Only David saying it did.

  1. Vs9 For his name shall be Solomom?

  1. 2Sa 12:24-25

24 And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he (David) called his name Solomon. And Jehovah loved him; 25 and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he (God) called his name Jedidiah, for Jehovah's sake.

David names him Solomon means "peace".

God (via Nathan) names him Jedidiah means "beloved of God".

  1. Vs10 Is David completely misunderstanding what God said back in 2 Samuel 7?

  1. We certainly realize that Solomon's kingdom was not forever. As a matter of fact it went off the rails rather dramatically.

  1. Solomon permitted idol worship

  1. As a matter of fact:

1Ki 11:5-11

5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 And Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and went not fully after Jehovah, as did David his father. 7 Then did Solomon build a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, in the mount that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon. 8 And so did he for all his foreign wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods. 9 And Jehovah was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from Jehovah, the God of Israel, who had appeared unto him twice, 10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which Jehovah commanded. 11 Wherefore Jehovah said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.

Wait, I thought that God said he would not take the kingdom from "him" like he took it from Saul?

(2Sa 7:15 but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.)

Makes you wonder if Solomon was supposed to build the temple at all????

1Ch 22:11-14

11 Now, my son, Jehovah be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of Jehovah thy God, as he hath spoken concerning thee. 12 Only Jehovah give thee discretion and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel; that so thou mayest keep the law of Jehovah thy God. 13 Then shalt thou prosper, if thou observe to do the statutes and the ordinances which Jehovah charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; fear not, neither be dismayed.

1Ch 22:14-16

14 Now, behold, in my affliction I have prepared for the house of Jehovah a hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver, and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto. 15 Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all men that are skilful in every manner of work: 16 of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise and be doing, and Jehovah be with thee.

When was David ever tasked with accumulating gold, silver, brass and iron?

I thought God said that he was going to establish his temple after David died?

1Ch 22:17-19

17 David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, 18 Is not Jehovah your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before Jehovah, and before his people. 19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek after Jehovah your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of Jehovah God, to bring the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of Jehovah.

Hmmm….

1Ch 28:10-13

10 Take heed now; for Jehovah hath chosen thee to build a house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it. 11 Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch of the temple, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper rooms thereof, and of the inner chambers thereof, and of the place of the mercy-seat; 12 and the pattern of all that he had by the (his) Spirit, for the courts of the house of Jehovah, and for all the chambers round about, for the treasuries of the house of God, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things; 13 also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of Jehovah, and for all the vessels of service in the house of Jehovah;

Look at verse 12

ASV "and the pattern of all that he had by the (his) Spirit,"

Septuagint "and the plan which he had in his mind"

ESV "and the plan of all that he had in mind for the courts"

NASB "and the plan of all that he had in mind"

Deu 17:14-17

14 When thou art come unto the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are round about me; 15 thou shalt surely set him king over thee, whom Jehovah thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee; thou mayest not put a foreigner over thee, who is not thy brother. 16 Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he may multiply horses; forasmuch as Jehovah hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

1Ch 22:1-4

1 Then David said, This is the house of Jehovah God, and this is the altar of burnt-offering for Israel. 2 And David commanded to gather together the sojourners that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. 3 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the couplings; and brass in abundance without weight; 4 and cedar-trees without number: for the Sidonians and they of Tyre brought cedar-trees in abundance to David.

1Ch 28:2-12

2 Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: as for me, it was in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and for the footstool of our God; and I had made ready for the building. 3 But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build a house for my name, because thou art a man of war, and hast shed blood. 4 Howbeit Jehovah, the God of Israel, chose me out of all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be prince; and in the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel; 5 and of all my sons (for Jehovah hath given me many sons), he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of Jehovah over Israel. 6 And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts; for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. 7 And I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and mine ordinances, as at this day. 8 Now therefore, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of Jehovah, and in the audience of our God, observe and seek out all the commandments of Jehovah your God; that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children after you for ever. 9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for Jehovah searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: If thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. 10 Take heed now; for Jehovah hath chosen thee to build a house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it. 11 Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch of the temple, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper rooms thereof, and of the inner chambers thereof, and of the place of the mercy-seat; 12 and the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit, for the courts of the house of Jehovah, and for all the chambers round about, for the treasuries of the house of God, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things;

1Ki 5:3-5

3 Thou knowest how that David my father could not build a house for the name of Jehovah his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet. 4 But now Jehovah my God hath given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence. 5 And, behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build the house for my name.

1Ki 8:18-20

18 But Jehovah said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thy heart to build a house for my name, thou didst well that it was in thy heart: 19 nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house for my name. 20 And Jehovah hath established his word that he spake; for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as Jehovah promised, and have built the house for the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Zec 6:12-13 (520 BC approx date that God spoke to Zechariah)

12 and speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, saying, Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: and he shall grow up out of his place; and he shall build the temple of Jehovah; 13 even he shall build the temple of Jehovah; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Act 7:44-49 (Stephens rebuke includes whether God wanted Solomon to build Him a house)

44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he appointed who spake unto Moses, that he should make it according to the figure that he had seen. 45 Which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered on the possession of the nations, that God thrust out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David; 46 who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob. 47 But Solomon built him a house. 48 Howbeit the Most High dwelleth not in houses made with hands; as saith the prophet, 49 The heaven is my throne,  And the earth the footstool of my feet:  What manner of house will ye build me? saith the Lord:  Or what is the place of my rest?
