Daniel 7 - Part 2

 Summarize Dan 7:1-10

Dan 7:11-12

11 I beheld at that time because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake; I beheld even till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed, and it was given to be burned with fire. 12 And as for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

Summary

  1. The fourth beast with the little horn is burned with fire, on judgement day?

Who else was burned with fire?

  1. Babylon in Rev:18:1-8

  1. Harlot in Rev 17:16-18

  1. Achan - read Josh 7

Jos 7:13

Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow: for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is a devoted thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.

  1. Last words of David

***In the Targum, this passage was considered prophecy

(Aramaic paraphrase or interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, of a type made in 1st century AD for unlearned Jews who didn't understand Hebrew)

2 Sam 23:1-7

1 Now these are the last words of David.  David the son of Jesse saith,  And the man who was raised on high saith,  The anointed of the God of Jacob,  And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

-David/Jesus?

-annointed? Also Messiah

2 The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me,  And his word was upon my tongue. 3 The God of Israel said,  The Rock of Israel spake to me:  One that ruleth over men righteously,  That ruleth in the fear of God,

-Referring to prophetically to Jesus

4 He shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth,  A morning without clouds,  When the tender grass springeth out of the earth,  Through clear shining after rain.

-Refers to Jesus prophetically. Jesus comes as the rain, the early AND later rain

5 Verily my house is not so with God;  Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant,  Ordered in all things, and sure:  For it is all my salvation, and all my desire,  Although he maketh it not to grow.

-reference is to Jesus house who hasn't really grown

OR

-maybe to David house (Absalom, Amnon?)

6 But the ungodly shall be all of them as thorns to be thrust away,  Because they cannot be taken with the hand; 7 But the man that toucheth them  Must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear:  And they shall be utterly burned with fire in their place.

-Thorns are the ungodly in midst?

-why can't thorns be taken with the hand? (Wounds the hand)

-must be handled with iron and spear

-and uttered burned with fire

***Is the implication that the thorns within the HOUSE prevented growth?

***The same way that Joshua (Jos 7) and the Israelites couldn't defeat their enemies with the devoted thing in the midst.

***Both cases, they (wicked or thorns) needed to be burned with fire!

Heb 6:7-8

7 For the land which hath drunk the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receiveth blessing from God: 8 but if it beareth thorns and thistles, it is rejected and nigh unto a curse; whose end is to be burned.

**These are those of Israel/Church (in Joshua 7 and Heb 6)

  1. Tares

Mat 13:40

As therefore the tares are gathered up and burned with fire; so shall it be in the end of the world.

***Remember the wheat and tares grow up together till the end.

Note this verse:

Psa 57:4

My soul is among lions;  I lie among them that are set on fire,  Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows,  And their tongue a sharp sword.

**Who was among lions?

Daniel

**Who are those that were "set on fire"?

-Thorns

-Tares

-Harlot

-Babylon

-Achan

Daniel's vision shifts back to the scene in heaven.

Dan 7:13-14

13 I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, there came with the clouds of heaven one like unto a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Daniel seems to witness Jesus in heaven being brought before God and God gives Him dominion and an eternal kingdom which shall reign forever as in Rev 11:15.

Rev 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there followed great voices in heaven, and they said,  The kingdom of the world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever.

***So altho Jesus was given authority 2000 years ago in:

Mat 28:18

And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

**Seems that Jesus dominion/glory/kingdom is given after His second coming when:

  1. Dan 7:14

And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

  1. Rev 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there followed great voices in heaven, and they said,  The kingdom of the world is become (come into existence) the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever.

***Similarity to previous verses?

  1. reference is to Jesus house which hasn't really grown in 2 Sam 23:1-7

  2. Joshua 7:13 - "...O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you."

Dan 7:15-16

15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. 16 I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

He is distressed, frightened and alarmed. Why is Daniel grieved?

  1. maybe by the 4 beasts?

  2. maybe by the little horn?

**Wouldn't it be interesting to to know what the little horn spoke?**

  1. maybe by the general image of this dream that doesn't seem to make any sense. No understanding?

  2. prob not grieved by Jesus coronation

  3. prob afraid or sad of what he saw

For instance, in Rev 5:4 weeps when John (who is in heaven) sees that no one is worthy to open "the book and loose the seals"

Rev 5:4

And I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open the book, or to look thereon:

Any other thoughts as to why else might Daniel be troubled?

Or maybe because of what he thought the vision might mean

***In the midst of one of your dreams, did it ever occur to you to ask anyone 'in the dream itself' what the interpretation was?

-me either.

Who did he ask for an interpretation?

An angel?

Unnamed spiritual being?

Dan 7:17-18

17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, that shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

***Wait, wait... There was so much detail in verses 4-8 about the four beasts. Why does the angel ignore all the detail?

-vs 17 - He says the four beasts are four kings or kingdoms that rise up from the earth.

Then he goes right to the end...

-vs 18 -the saints of the Most High receive the kingdom for ever?

Wait, "the saints of the Most High receive the kingdom"? I thought Jesus does??

-Re-read vs 13-14

-Jesus, who comes w the clouds of heaven

-Who are the clouds of heaven?

Does the word "saint" include more than the "the clouds of heaven"? Is Jesus included in this?

-yes; Saints (h6922) - holy One, holy ones, saints

Before we continue onto the next verse, where Daniel ONLY inquires about the fourth beast, let's take a look at the first three beasts mentioned in verses 4-6.

Maybe Daniel already have an idea who the first beasts are?

**The angel doesn't give him much info. Any ideas what they may represent? Or what modern day prophecy says these may represent?

It may be related to Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2. The statue with the different metals.

First

Lion

(Jer 4:7)

Second

Bear

Third

Leopard

With Eagles wings

(Jer 4:13)

Babylon?

Raised up (stood up/set up?) on one side

Medes and Persians?

(Two sides: Medes and Persians)

(Persians were more prominent)

Four wings of a bird on its back

(Four wings??)

Greece?

(Alexander the great)

Wings plucked

(No longer able to soar)

Three ribs in it's mouth btw it's teeth

(Could be Babylon, Lydia and Egypt??

Had four heads

(4 generals of Greece who rule after Alexander the great's death?)

Lifted up from earth

Voice says unto it "Arise, devour much flesh

Dominion (sovereignty/rule) was given to it

Made to stand upon two feet as a man

Man's heart given to it

(After 7 years, man's heart given back to Nebuchadnezzar)

It may be related to Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2. The statue with the different metals.

Gold head

Silver breast/arms

Bronze belly/thighs

Any other ideas??

Dan 7:19

19 Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was diverse from all of them, exceeding terrible, whose teeth were of iron, and its nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet;

The fourth beast is diverse from all of them

Fourth Beast

Vs 7

Vs 19

Terrible, powerful and exceedingly strong

Exceeding terrible

Iron teeth

Teeth of iron

Nails of brass?

Devoured and brake in pieces

Devoured and brake in pieces

Stamped the residue with it's feet

Stamped the residue with it's feet

Different from other 3 beasts

Different from other beasts

Legs of iron

Roman empire?

What else? Diverse from other 3

Spiritual kingdom?

Jesus comes during the 4th beast

Brass and iron only? (Jer 6:28 & Is 48:4)

Brake in pieces (could be good or bad)

Stamped the residue w feet (good that turns bad? Ez 34:18)

Iron (Jesus rules w rod of iron in Rev 19:15)

Iron (Manchild rules w rod of iron in Rev 12:5)

Iron (Overcomer rules w rod of iron in Rev 2:27)

Dan 7:20

20 and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, and before which three fell, even that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake great things, whose look was more stout than its fellows.

End of vs 7 and 8

Vs 20

Had 10 horns

(10=perfection of divine order)

Horn= horn, cornet, strength

Had 10 horns

Another horn, a little horn

11= disorder, disorganization, imperfection, and disintegration.

Many think this is a reference to the antichrist

Other horn

Three of the first 10 horns are plucked up by their roots

Plucked up - exterminate, hamstrung

As it was coming up, 3 horns fell

In this horn were eyes, like the eyes of a man

Horn has eyes

In this horn was a mouth speaking great things

Horn has mouth speaking great things

Horns  appearance is great above it's allies (fellow horns)

Dan 7:21-22

I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; 22 until the ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

How would the little horn make war with the saints and prevail against them?

  1. physically?

  2. Like Germany did against Jews?

  3. Shake their fists against God in anger?

  4. or spiritually?

How?

Slow erosion of Gospel? people?

Or changing of Gospel?

**As we said before, the little horn blabbers on until judgement day

Dan 7:23-26

23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be a fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all the kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. 24 And as for the ten horns, out of this kingdom shall ten kings arise: and another shall arise after them; and he shall be diverse from the former, and he shall put down three kings. 25 And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High; and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time. 26 But the judgment shall be set, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

So the 4th beast may represent:

  1. Roman Empire?

  2. Spiritual empire?

  3. Tares/thorns in kingdom that hinder it's growth?

Other possible instances of the "Little Horn"

  1. The "Assyrian" Micah 5:2-15

  2. The "Assyrian" in Isaiah 14:24-27

(The entire chapter suggests this. Vs 1-17)

Note:

Many scholars thru the years have a list of ten nations that they think are the ten horns. Obviously these nations have changes thru the years.

This is an uncomfortable fit BUT if there is a relationship btw the Dan 7 dream AND the Dan 2 dream, is there a connection btw to the mouth/eyes of the little horn AND the mixture and feet of the statue?

**Compare feet of the statue in Daniel 2:33 and 43 with Dan 7:24**

Dan 2:33

its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay.

Dan 2:43

And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay.

Bottom of statue in Dan 2 is described as having feet. How many toes does the statue have?

What were the feet made of?

Dan 2:33

its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay.

What did the clay represent?

Dan 2: 43

...describes the (miry) clay as the 'seed of men'

The fourth beast in Dan 7 has how many horns?

10

The little horn arises from the 10 horns. But what does it have that is similar to the feet in Dan 2?

Both are mentioned as having the something related to "man"

  • One is mixed with miry clay

  • The other has a man's mouth and man's eyes

***Is it possible that the feet in Dan 2 and the 10 horns and/or the little horn are speaking of the same thing?

Rev 13:5-7 seems to speak of a similar event or time period

Rev 13:5-7

5 and there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and there was given to him authority to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth for blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, even them that dwell in the heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and there was given to him authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation.

Dan 7:27-28

27 And the kingdom and the dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High: his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. 28 Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts much troubled me, and my countenance was changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.
