Solomon's Temple?

King David - King Solomon and the building of the temple?

Show "David Timeline.jpg"

1010 BC - King of Hebron

1003 BC - King over all Israel

Tonight's story is probably just a few years into David's reign over all Israel

  970 BC - David dies

  970-931 BC - Solomon's reign

2Sa 7:1-4

1 And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about, 2 that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. 3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Jehovah is with thee. 4 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Jehovah came unto Nathan, saying,

  1. David desires to build a house for God. I wonder why?

  1. Seems that David prefers cedar over curtains?

  1. One of God's prophets during David's kingship is Nathan. What do we know about Nathan?

  1. This is the first instance Nathan is mentioned in the OT.

  1. Later he will reprimand David on his sin with Bathsheba

  1. Nathan writes histories of the reigns of both David and Solomon

  1. David and Bathsheba have another son and ironically name him Nathan.

  1.  Luk 3:31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,

Either the genealogy of Mary or Joseph

  1. Nathan tells the dying David of the plot of Adonijah (one of David's other sons)  to become king, which results in Solomon being proclaimed king instead.

  1. In this instance, he doesn't consult God before answering David.

  1. God, despite not being consulted by Nathan, mercifully gives Nathan a dream with his real answer. Seems God is fond of Nathan…

Here is God's answer:

2 Sam 7:5-11

5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in? 6 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar? 8 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Israel; 9 and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first, 11 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.

  1. Vs5 Go tell David "are you going to build a house for me to live in?"

    1. The Septuagint is a little more direct "Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in."

  1. Vs6  "I haven't dwelt in a house since the day that I brought Israel out of Egypt, even to today, I walk in a tent and in a tabernacle."

  1. Vs7 "Did I ever command any of my leaders "why haven't you built me a cedar House?"

  1. Depending on the translation that you read, God almost sounds irritated that David will even suggest such a thing.

  1. Vs8 Tell David, "I took you from being a shepherd over sheep to being a leader over my people.

  1. Vs9 God continues, "I was with you wherever you went. I destroyed all your enemies before you. I made you renowned according to the great ones on the Earth"

  1. God seems to emphasis to David that his success was because God gave him success.

  1. Vs10 God continues "I will appoint a place for Israel. I will plant them securely in their own place so they won't be distressed or afflicted anymore.

  1. Vs11 God continues "from the days I appointed judges over Israel. I have (or will) give you rest from all your enemies…

  1. Vs11 and I declare that I will build a house for you.

  1. What type of house might God build for David and Israel?

  1. Thoughts?

  1. Maybe a reminder from God to David that he is the one that has done all the work and provided the means the strength and the power

  1. And also a promise to David that He is the house builder

2 Sam 7:12-16

12 When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; 15 but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

  1. Vs12 David, after your days are done and your death, I will raise up your offspring after you which comes from your bowels. And I will establish his kingdom.

  1. Notice that God makes a point of saying that He is the one who will establish this descendant of David

  1. Who does David seem to think God is referring to? Solomon

  1. Mat 1:6

and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah;

  1. Mat 1:16 and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

  1. Remember what Jesus said: Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

  1. Vs13 God says: He shall build a house for my name and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  1. Notice how God goes out of his way to assume ownership and responsibility for building it completely independent from David.

  1. David makes the assumption that who builds the temple? Solomon

  1. Vs14 God says, "I will be his father and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of God."

  1. God declares that he will be the father and this person who will build the house will be his son.

  1. David seems to make the assumption that this individual will be not only God's son but his own son Solomon.

  1. If he commits iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men and the stripes of the children of men…does this refer to someone other than the sinless Christ?

  1. This seems to be answered in Psalms 89

Psa 89:28-34

28 My lovingkindness will I keep for him for evermore;  And my covenant shall stand fast with him. 29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever,  And his throne as the days of heaven. 30 If his children forsake my law,  And walk not in mine ordinances; 31 If they break my statutes,  And keep not my commandments; 32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod,  And their iniquity with stripes. 33 But my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him,  Nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. 34 My covenant will I not break,  Nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

  1. Vs15 Unlike Saul, my lovingkindness will not depart from him

  1. Vs16 your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever. Your throne shall be established forever.

  1. Back to David, this might suggest to him that this would be his offspring, Solomon.

  1. The septuagent says it differently:

2Sa 7:16

And his house shall be made sure, and his kingdom for ever before me, and his throne shall be set up for ever.

2 Sam 7:17-22

17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. 18 Then David the king went in, and sat before Jehovah; and he said, Who am I, O Lord Jehovah, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far? 19 And this was yet a small thing in thine eyes, O Lord Jehovah; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come; and this too after the manner of men, O Lord Jehovah! 20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou knowest thy servant, O Lord Jehovah. 21 For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make thy servant know it. 22 Wherefore thou art great, O Jehovah God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

  1. Vs18 Who am I, O Lord Jehovah, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?

  1. Discrepancy between "your house" and "his house" in verse 16.

  1. Seems David hears "my house"

  1. House is found in these verses:

    1. 2Sa 7:5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

  1. 2Sa 7:6 for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

  1. 2Sa 7:7 In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

  1. 2Sa 7:11 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.

  1. 2Sa 7:13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

  1. 2Sa 7:16 And thy (his) house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy (his) throne shall be established for ever.

  1. Seems David hears "my house"

  1. Vs19 "but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come; and this too after the manner of men, O Lord Jehovah! Who is "thy servant"?

  1. Vs20-21 20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou knowest thy servant, O Lord Jehovah. 21 For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make thy servant know it.

  1. Vs22 Wherefore thou art great, O Jehovah God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

  1. "We have heard with our ears"

2 Sam 7:23-29

23 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, and to make him a name, and to do great things for you, and terrible things for thy land, before thy people, whom thou redeemedst to thee out of Egypt, from the nations and their gods? 24 And thou didst establish to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever; and thou, Jehovah, becamest their God. 25 And now, O Jehovah God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, confirm thou it for ever, and do as thou hast spoken. 26 And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of thy servant David shall be established before thee. 27 For thou, O Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee. 28 And now, O Lord Jehovah, thou art God, and thy words are truth, and thou hast promised this good thing unto thy servant: 29 now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord Jehovah, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

It doesn't appear that Solomon is even born yet…until

2Sa 12:24-25

24 And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon (peace) (variation of shalom). And Jehovah loved him; 25 and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah (beloved of Jehovah), for Jehovah's sake.

Scholars think that Solomon was between ages 14 and 24 when these verses were written…

1Ch 22:5-6

5 And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for Jehovah must be exceeding magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death. 6 Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build a house for Jehovah, the God of Israel.

  1. Huh? What assumptions are being made here?

  1. Even tho God said that He would build the house, David has assumed that it is his son who will build the house.

  1. And David has determined that Solomon is the son that has been tasked with building the house.

  1. David has determined that it is his job to gather as many supplies as possible for Solomon in order to help build it.

  1. David tells Solomon it is his job to build the house

So what has changed?
