Hell - pt 4

  1. Mat 10:28

And be not afraid of them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Gehenna).

  1. Here is the context:

(Jesus is speaking only to His 12 disciples!)

Mat 10:25-26

25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household! 26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

  1. Who called the master of the House beelzebub?

  1. Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This man doth not cast out demons, but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.

  1. Mar 3:22 And the scribes that came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and, By the prince of the demons casteth he out the demons.

  1. Who is the master of the house?

  1. Jesus - Mat 10:25; Luk13:25; Luk14:21

  1. Every scribe who hath been made a disciple is also a "householder" or "master of the house"

Mat 13:52 And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

  1. Who does Jesus tell the disciples not to fear? Whoever had called Jesus "Beelzebub".

  1. Scribes in Mark 3:22

  2. Pharisees in Mat 12:24

  1. Vs26 Covered - revealed? Hid - known?

  1. Mat 10:26

Fear them (scribes and Pharisees) not therefore: for there is nothing covered (G2572), that shall not be revealed (G601); and hid (G2927), that shall not be known (G1097).

The assumption is that the scribes and Pharisees cover (G2572) and hide (G2927)?

Ecc 12:14

For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

1Co 4:5

Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

Could be:

  1. "Though my gospel is now covered and hid, yet it shall be revealed and made known."

  1. "Though your innocency be hid and covered, yet God shall bring forth your judgment as the light, and your righteousness as the noonday."

  1. "Though your enemies’ rage and malice be hid, and their vengeance seemeth to sleep, yet it shall be revealed."

  1.  Mat 10:27-28

27 What I tell you in the darkness, speak ye in the light; and what ye hear in the ear, proclaim upon the house-tops. 28 And be not afraid of them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

  1. Vs27 What does Jesus say in the darkness? Parables

  1. Vs27 …speak in the light. Speak plainly the meaning of the parables

  1. Vs27 what you hear in the ear? perceiving with the mind, or understanding and knowing

  1. Vs27 proclaim on the housetops? So that all will take notice and hear by proclaiming loudly?

  1. Vs28 Fear not them…Who are them? Scribes and Pharisees

  1. Vs28 And be not afraid of them that kill the body Which body? The natural body…maybe also the spiritual body?

  1. Vs28 rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Gehenna) Fear God who is able to kill both body and soul in Gehenna.

  1. But again, just like the right eye and the right hand, this is in relation to the wicked scribes and Pharisees who altho can kill the natural body (and possible God's spiritual body on earth), they don't have the ability to cast anyone into Gehenna.

  1. Mat 18:8-9 (Jesus speaks this to His disciples)

8 And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or halt, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. 9 And if thine eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

  1. Context:

Mat 18:3-7

3 and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me: 6 but whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea. 7 Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling! for it must needs be that the occasions come; but woe to that man through whom the occasion cometh!

  1. Vs6 whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble

  1. Who are these little ones or little children? Immature christians

  1. Who are the ones that cause immature christians to stumble? Maybe Religious leaders?

  1. Vs6 Why should a millstone be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea? Because this would label him with his true identity.

  1. Rev 18:21

And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all.

  1.  Mat 18:8

And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or halt, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.

  1. Foot? Seems hand and foot may go together

  1. Pro 4:26-27

26 Make level the path of thy feet,  And let all thy ways be established. 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left:  Remove thy foot from evil.

  1. Psa 36:11

Let not the foot of pride come against me,  And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.

  1. 1Ch 20:6

And there was again war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot; and he also was born unto the giant. Who was this? Goliath

  1. Eze 6:11

Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Smite with thy hand, and stamp with thy foot, and say, Alas! because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel; for they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence.

So hand and foot seems a metaphor for the evil house of Israel

  1. Eternal fire?

    1. G166 aiōnios - adjective

  1. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%CE%B1%E1%BC%B0%CF%8E%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82

  1. From G165 aion - noun meaning age

  1. an age, a cycle (of time), especially of the present age as contrasted with the future age, and of one of a series of ages stretching to infinity.

  1. Col 1:26

even the mystery which hath been hid for ages and generations: but now hath it been manifested to his saints,

  1. Eph 2:7

that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

  1. Mat 18:9

And if thine eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

  1. Eye - we already discussed being a metaphor for the wayward leaders of God's people

  1. Gehenna (hell) fire is spoken when relating to God's wayward leaders.

  1. Mat_23:15 (Jesus is speaking to the multitude and disciples)

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

  1. We can assume that the multitude includes scribes and Pharisees

  1. Gehenna is referred again to in relation to the Scribes and Pharisees.

  1. A proselyte is a newcomer, a stranger, an alien or possible someone who is converted to Judaism. Probably not a Jew.

  1. So in relations to the scribes or Pharisees, those that have been made into their image are also sons of hell

  1. Mat_23:33

Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell?

  1. Who is Jesus referring to here?

Vs29 "scribes and Pharisees"

  1. Gehenna is again spoken in relation to the hypercritical religious order of the scribes and Pharisees.

  1. Mar 9:43

And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.

  1. Hand - we already discussed being a metaphor for the wayward leaders of God's people.

Ps 144:9-11

  1. Gehenna (hell) fire is spoken when relating to God's wayward leaders.

  1. Mar 9:45

And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell.

  1. Mar 9:47

And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out: it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell;

  1. Luk_12:5

But I will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

  1. This is spoken in relation to the "leaven of the Pharisees". Don't be afraid of them!

  1. Jas_3:6

And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

  1. What might this mean?

  1. The idea here is, that that which causes the tongue to do so much evil derives its origin from hell. Nothing could better characterize much of that which the tongues does, than to say that it has its origin in hell, and has the spirit which reigns there. The very spirit of that world of fire and wickedness - a spirit of falsehood, and slander, and blasphemy, and pollution - seems to inspire the tongue. The image which seems to have been before the mind of the apostle was that of a torch which enkindles and burns everything as it goes along - a torch itself lighted at the fires of hell. One of the most striking descriptions of the woes and curses which there may be in hell, would be to portray the sorrows caused on the earth by the tongue.

Hell - pt3

 Hell

In NT

  1. tartaroo

  2. Hades

  3. Gehenna

Gehenna in OT is called Hinnom

  1. Review it's location

  2. Review it's OT purpose - trash dump w fire

  3. Review Molech/Topheth

  4. Review God words which he spoke 3x's

    1. "I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin." Hell

  1. God changes the name from valley of the son of Hinnom to the valley of slaughter

  1. In Zec 11, God takes the liberty of feeding the flock of slaughter

  1. This takes us out of the OT and into the NT where we will look at the usage of Himmon (or it's NT counterpart, Gehenna)

Bible Study 98

Gehenna in NT continued…

  1. Mat 5:22 (Jesus is speaking to the disciples)

but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell (Gehenna) of fire.

  1. Let's look at the context:

Mat 5:17-19

17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  1. Vs17 Jesus speaks here and says He didn't come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it.

  1. Vs18 Jesus says that the law even in the least shall not be destroyed until its purpose has been accomplished or finished

  1. Vs19 Jesus is talking about the ten commandments.

  1. Vs19 if you break one of the ten commandments and then teach others to break it, you shall be least in the kingdom of heaven.

-Who are they? Teachers? Religious teachers?

-These people will still get into kingdom of heaven??? Yes but are considered least

  1. Vs19 but if you DO the 10 commandments and teach others to DO them also, you shall be great in the kingdom of heaven

-Who are these? Certainly religious TEACHERS?

-Those that DO and teach others to DO will be great in the kingdom of heaven

Mat 5:20

20 For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.

  1. Vs20 in order for you to get into the king of heaven, YOUR righteousness has to exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. Because they aren't even going to get into the kingdom of heaven.

Where does this come from and what is their crime? Jesus is getting ready to tell us

Mat 5:21

21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

  1. Vs21 Thou shalt not kill? Huh? What is Jesus talking about?

  1. He is referring to the 10 commandments. In particular, the 6th commandment

Look at the OT verses:

Exo 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

Deu 5:17 Thou shalt not kill.

  1. But look back at Vs21. Jesus says more;

"Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment"

  1. Where was this ever spoken? It wasn't. Jesus is not quoting from the OT but from the teachings of the scribes and Pharisees.

  1. What is the crime of the scribes and Pharisees? Adding or changing God's word?

Mat 5:22

but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.

  1. Vs22 Jesus seems to be making crystal clear the punishment for the 6th commandment "thou shalt not murder" which the scribes and Pharisees have taken the liberty of adding to.

  1. He does this by breaking down "thou shalt not murder"  into at least three smaller degrees

  1.  Firstly, just being angry with his brother puts you "in danger of the judgment".

What crime did the Scribes and Pharisees say put you in danger of the judgement?

Murder. Now it's anger with your brother

  1.  Secondly, whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. (Sanhedrin or judge)

Raca - O empty one, that is, thou worthless, vain

  1. Thirdly, whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell (Gehenna) of fire.

Fool - G3474 moros - dull, sluggish, stupid, impious

  1. Ironically Jesus calls the scribes and Pharisees "fools" in Mat 23:17 & 19

Questions?

  1. So why does Jesus condemn a person who calls someone a "fool" to Gehenna or hell?

  1. And why are these a subsection of "thou shalt not kill"?

  1. Or is He changing it so murder also include your thoughts, and not only just your actions?

  1. Mat 5:29

And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell (Gehenna).

  1. On the surface:  If your right eye   causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. Its better to lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into gehenna .

  1. Here is the context:

Mat 5:27-28

27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

So the context is in relation to another one of the 10 commandments, the 7th commandment: Thou shalt not commit adultery.

  1. Vs27 Jesus seems to be redefining  "thou shalt not commit adultery"

  1. Vs28 Now if you look on a woman to lust after her, you've committed adultery already in your heart.

  1. Now let's reread verse 29.

Vs29 And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell (Gehenna).

  1. Why only the right eye?

  1. What about the left eye?

  1. And what might it mean that it is profitable that one of our members should perish so their whole body isnt cast into hell (gehenna)?

  1. Zec 11:17

Woe to the worthless shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.

  1. What does the right eye represent?

The worthless shepherd is unfaithful to the flock. He leaves the flock. The right eye shall be utterly darkened

  1. What did the right eye/worthless shepherd do? It left the flock.

So what kind of adultery does he commit? Spiritual adultery

  1. So what might this mean?

  1. Mat 5:29

And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell (Gehenna).

Cast out that part of the worthless shepherds that have committed spiritual adultery. So the entire flock doesn't go to hell (Gehenna).

Jesus takes this commandment and adds the spiritual application of it.

  1. Mat 5:30

And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell (Gehenna).

  1. Here is the context:

Mat 5:27-28

27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

The context is obviously still adultery.

  1. Vs27 Jesus continues redefining "thou shalt not commit adultery"

  1. vs30

And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell.

  1. Does Jesus really want us to cut off our right hand and cast it away? No

  1. And what might it mean that it is profitable that one of our members should perish so their whole body isnt cast into hell (gehenna)?

  1. By and large, the right hand is spoken of overwhelmingly as the belonging to God and referring to his power and strength. But in this instance it is referring to something totally different.

  1. Psa 144:7-8

7 Stretch forth thy hand from above;  Rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters,  Out of the hand of strange children; 8 Whose mouth speaketh deceit,  And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

  1. Psa 144:11 (spoken again)

11 Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hand of aliens,  Whose mouth speaketh deceit,  And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Psa 144:12-13 (when?)

12 When our sons shall be as plants grown up in their youth,  And our daughters as corner-stones hewn after the fashion of a palace; 13 When our garners are full, affording all manner of store,  And our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields;

Mat 13:30 (at the harvest)

Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.

Mat 13:43 (then the righteous will shine forth)

Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears, let him hear.

Psa 144:14-15 (after the tares are removed)

14 When our oxen are well laden;  When there is no breaking in, and no going forth,  And no outcry in our streets: 15 Happy is the people that is in such a case;  Yea, happy is the people whose God is Jehovah.

  1. Psa 26:9-10

9 Gather not my soul with sinners,  Nor my life with men of blood; 10 In whose hands is wickedness,  And their right hand is full of bribes.

  1. What does the right hand represent?

  1. How is Jesus redefining adultery? Again it seems to be spiritual adultery instead of just adultery btw husband and wife? Ironically enough, what does Jesus do when he catches a woman actually committing adultery?

  1. Reread Psalms 26:1-5 - Psalm of David

    1. Vs4 I have not sat with men of falsehood

    2. Vs4 I will not go in with disassemblers

    3. Vs5 I hate the assembly of evil doers

    4. Vs5 I will not sit with the wicked

  1. Who does Jesus hang with? a friend of publicans and sinners, hangs out with winebibbers

  1. Therefore, this Psalm takes on new meaning now. Who are the wicked, the evildoers, the man of falsehoods, and the disassemblers? The religious leaders

  1. Again it is easy to see that the right hand belongs to the spiritual harlot, religious leaders of the day. And Jesus is saying that right hand of the religious harlot needs to be cut off or the whole body of the religious harlot will be cast into Gehenna

So Jesus references Gehenna in Mat 5 three times. The first is in reference to thou shall not kill. And the second and third times are in reference to spiritual adultery.
