Mark 11

 Mar 11:1-3

1 And when they draw nigh unto Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth two of his disciples, 2 and saith unto them, Go your way into the village that is over against you: and straightway as ye enter into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon no man ever yet sat; loose him, and bring him. 3  And if any one say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye, The Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him back hither.

  1. As they are entering Jerusalem, Jesus sends two of his disciples into a village and tells them that they will find a colt that no man ever sat on.

  1. Why is it significant that this colt has never had anyone sit on it before? Don't tell them as we will discuss it in a few minutes

  1. He tells them to loosen the colt and bring it to him.

  1. And he tells the disciples that if anyone asks why they are taking it, to tell them that the Lord needs it and he will send it back when he's done.

  1. Why does Jesus need a colt?

Zec 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass.

  1. Does Jesus need to go around and make sure scripture is fulfilled? Not sure…

Do you think he had to seek out the owner of the colt ahead of time to see if he could borrow it?

Did he do the Jedi mind trick with the Colt owner?

Mark 11:4-10

4 And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door without in the open street; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had said: and they let them go. 7 And they bring the colt unto Jesus, and cast on him their garments; and he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their garments upon the way; and others branches, which they had cut from the fields. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed is the kingdom that cometh, the kingdom of our father David: Hosanna in the highest.

Zec 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass.

  1. Notice that the king is riding upon an ass and also a colt, the foal of an ass. So he seems to be riding on BOTH a colt and an ass. Weird

Mat 21:1-2

1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and came unto Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying unto them, Go into the village that is over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.

The two disciples bring both the ass and the ass’ colt

Mat 21:4-5

4 Now this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Zion,  Behold, thy King cometh unto thee,  Meek, and riding upon an assAnd upon a colt the foal of an ass.

  1. Jesus rides upon both the ass and the colt…

  1. What might this mean?

  1. And again, what might the significance be of the fact that the colt has never been ridden on before?

Gen 49:10-11

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,  Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,  Until Shiloh come:  And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples (nations) be. 11 Binding his foal unto the vine,  And his ass's colt unto the choice vine;  He hath washed his garments in wine,  And his vesture in the blood of grapes:

  1. Vs10 Sceptre - rod, staff, branch, offshoot, club, tribe

  1. Vs10 Who came from Judah? Jesus

  1. Vs10 So the rod/branch shall not depart from Jesus

  1. Vs10 Nor the rulers staff from between his feet. So Jesus's feet seem to also have this rulers staff/rod/branch/Sceptre. Who or what are Jesus's feet?

  1. Zec 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the mount of Olives shall be cleft in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

  1. Vs10 Until Shiloh come:  And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples (nations) be.

  1. Unto him shall be The obedience of the peoples (or nations)?

  1. Who do the Nations obey currently? Themselves

  1. Who is given authority over the Nations in revelations?

  1. Rev 2:26

And he that overcometh, and he that keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give authority over the nations:

  1. The Septuagint says “until there come the things stored up for him; and he is the expectation of nations.”

  1. The church age has no authority over the Nations. But the next age for the day 7 overcomers or the resurrected sons, or The Man child group etc, we'll have authority over the Nations.

  1. Vs11 Binding his foal unto the vine,  And his ass's colt unto the choice vine

  1. Who are these? Remember Jesus sat on both of these but only the colt was never written on before. What might they represent?

  1. Maybe “foal unto the vine” is God/Jesus coming to His OT people via the OT law

  1. Maybe the “ass colt unto the choice vine” is Jesus coming to His NT people.

  1. Or maybe “foal unto the vine” is Jesus coming to His NT people at His first coming?

  1. Or maybe the “ass colt unto the choice vine” is Jesus coming to His NT people at His second coming?

Mark 11:11-14

11 And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple; and when he had looked round about upon all things, it being now eventide, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve. 12 And on the morrow, when they were come out from Bethany, he hungered. 13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season of figs. 14 And he answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit from thee henceforward for ever. And his disciples heard it.

What does the fig tree represent?

  1. Possibly the old covenant/law?

  2. OT Israel?

If the fig tree represents the old covenant law / Old testament Israel, does the Genesis 49 passage refer to the first and second coming of Christ?

Mark 11:15-19

15 And they come to Jerusalem: and he entered into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and them that bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold the doves; 16 and he would not suffer that any man should carry a vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught, and said unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? but ye have made it a den of robbers.  18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, for all the multitude was astonished at his teaching. 19 And every evening he went forth out of the city.

Why does Jesus go into the temple in Jerusalem and do this? Especially after withering up the fig tree?

Mark 11:20-25

20 And as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots. 21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Rabbi, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.  23 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it.  24 Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.  25 And whensoever ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have aught against any one; that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

  1. Vs20-21 The fig tree has quickly withered up by the next morning.

  1. Why? I'm assuming it is because it represents natural Israel and is metaphoric for God speaking to his people via Old testament law.

  1. Vs22 Have faith in God. It would seem that whoever he is talking to here requires a large measure of Faith to do.

  1. Vs23 having faith in God will enable you to say to this mountain “be thou taken up and cast into the sea”. What might this mean? What mountain?

  1. Mountain?

    1. Rev 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

  1. Rev 18:21 And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all.

  1. Vs24 All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

  1. Do we have this now? It doesn't seem like it.

  1. Do we have the things we ask for now whenor  if we really believe for them?

  1. Seems like at times the will of the father trump's everything.

  1. Again I can't help but wonder if this isn't a promise for the full grown man, because we will see Jesus for who he really is. Instead of seeing through the glass darkly. And we will dwell in his throne room…

  1. Could he be speaking to his overcomer/manchild/resurrected sons group somewhere down the line during the seventh day? Maybe

Mark 11:26-

26 - - - 27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders; 28 and they said unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? or who gave thee this authority to do these things? 29 And Jesus said unto them, I will ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? answer me. 31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? 32 But should we say, From men — they feared the people: for all verily held John to be a prophet. 33 And they answered Jesus and say, We know not. And Jesus saith unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
