Matt 24 - Part 2

 Review

Mat 24:27

27 For as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

****What/who is lightning (h216) Referenced multiple times in Job 37.

  1. Job 37:1-3

1 Yea, at this my heart trembleth,  And is moved out of its place. 2 Hear, oh, hear the noise of his voice,  And the sound that goeth out of his mouth. 3 He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven,  And his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

Continued...

4 After it a voice roareth;  He thundereth with the voice of his majesty;  And he restraineth not the lightnings when his voice is heard

  1. 2Th 1:10

when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.

  1. Job 37:15

Dost thou know how God layeth his charge upon them,  And causeth the lightning of his cloud to shine?

  1. Zec 9:12(read slowly)

12 Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope: even to-day do I declare that I will render double unto thee.

Who was rendered double? Or given a double portion?

Elisha. Double portion is needed for dealing with the harlot Jezebel.

  1. Zec 9:13

13 For I have bent Judah for me, I have filled the bow with Ephraim; and I will stir up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and will make thee as the sword of a mighty man.

Judah (think Judaea from Mat 24:16) is the bow, Ephraim (means doubly fruitful) is the arrow.

Sons of Zion vs Sons of Greece

Same as "the Summer-house is used to smite the Winter-house"

  1. Zec 9:14

14 And Jehovah shall be seen over them; and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and the Lord Jehovah will blow the trumpet, and will go with whirlwinds of the south.

So arrows of Ephraim (double portion) are shot from the bow of Judah.

The arrows are as lightning. Double portion is the empowered Elisha ministry who fights against the harlot and does many Great signs and miracles on the Earth.

Arrow=lightning=Ephraim=double portion=Elisha=summer house=glorified saints on day 7.

So lightning is a metaphor for Jesus coming to be glorified in His saints on the 7th day.

Mat 24:28-31

28 Wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Carcase - (g4430)

a ruin, that is, (specifically) lifeless body (corpse, carrion): - dead body, carcase, corpse.

Eagle (vultures) (g105)

Eagle (or vulture); From the same as G109; an eagle (from its wind like flight); not a vulture

  1. Whose carcase?  Harlot, Winter-house

  1. What do the eagles represent?

Any guesses? Prob the opposite group that is mentioned in this chapter (and Amos, Zechariah, Job etc)

  1. Arrow

  2. lightning

  3. Ephraim

  4. double portion

  5. Elisha

  6. summer-house

  7. glorified saints on day 7

  8. Eagles

  1. So the these empowered glorified saints play a part in the ruination of the harlot.

  1. So it might be this: Wherever the lifeless corpse (of the harlot?) is, the eagles (the elisha/double empowered ministry?) will be gathered together?

  1. Eagle is used 4x`s in NT. Never translated "vulture"

  1. 4x's "eagle" is mentioned in NT. All times are interpreted "eagles" not "vultures".

Other gospel instance of "eagle"

Luke 17:34-37

34 I say unto you, In that night there shall be two men on one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. 35 There shall be two women grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. 36 - - - 37 And they answering say unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Where the body is, thither will the eagles also be gathered together.

Eagle is the same word as Mat 24:28.

But Body (4983) is a different word:

"the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally or figuratively: - bodily, body, slave"

So in Luke, "Where the body (as a whole) is, thither will the eagles also be gathered together."

Luke: Where the bodies of true believers are, there the eagles will be?

Matthew: Where ever the lifeless corpse is, there the eagles will be gathered.

 Compatible?

Mat 24:29-31

29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Actual second coming?

Mat 24:32-33

32 Now from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh; 33 even so ye also, when ye see all these things, know ye that he is nigh, even at the doors.

Jesus is EXTREMELY CLEVER with His words!

  1. Branch…

Isa 4:2-4

2 In that day shall the branch of Jehovah be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. 3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem; 4 when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof, by the spirit of justice, and by the spirit of burning.

  1. "In that day shall the branch be beautiful and glorious"? What day? 7th

  1. Read verse 1

Isa 4:1

And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name; take thou away our reproach.

  1. Summer is near? (Summer-house)

Mat 24:34-36

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.

  1. Which generation?

The 42nd generation...those in Christ Jesus

"The 42nd generation is between Jesus and Christ. Jesus came to earth, undressing all the way to enter his humanity. Jesus was the man part of God and Christ is the God-part. Yes, they are one and the same, but they are also different. The 42nd generation that this text is talking about not only was Christ himself, but also is us, the body of Christ. And to that extent, the 42nd generation will come about when Christ is formed in us as the body of Christ."

  1. "But of that day and hour knoweth no one"?

  1. Is Jesus saying you can't know the "day AND hour"?

  1. Can we know the day? It seems that it is spoken of quite frequently...

Mat 24:37-39

37 And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

  1. Vs37 As the days of Noah, no one knows the day and hour of Jesus coming. Or did they??

  1. Vs38 What are the days of Noah? Those days before the flood?

Gen 7:4

4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the ground.

Either "in 7 days" or "7 days from now"

  1. Vs38 Did Noah know when the rains/flood would begin? Yes

Noah knew the DAY of the flood would begin.

  1. When did Noah enter the ark? Certainly w/i those 7 days.

  1. According to Gen 7:4, Noah didn't know exact time the rain/flood would begin. But he had been preparing for it for a long time. What does this imply about our relationship w Jesus?

  1. Vs38 Per Jesus, what was everyone else besides Noah and his family during the seven days that God gave Noah?

Eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage

  1. Vs39 Noah knew but "they" did not know till the flood came. Who are "They"? Every man (Gen 7:21)

  1. The flood took them ALL away. If the flood takes them all away, we could assume it is referring to those NOT in the ark (or those who didn't recognize the coming of Jesus).

  1. "Took them all away" g142 as in

Joh 15:2

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh it away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit.

In this example, we don't want to be taken away.

  1. How old was Noah when the flood came?

Gen 7:6

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

And just so you don't miss it:

Gen 7:11

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Which DAY was NOAH on in his life? Early 7th day.

Note: the emphasis of the two different groups:

  1. Those who entered the ark because they knew (about the coming flood)

  1. Those who didn't enter the ark because they didn't know (about the flood)

Mat 24:40-41

40 Then shall two (men) be in the field; one is taken, and one is left: 41 two women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left.

  1. Seems we don't want to be taken like ALL the wicked in the story of Noah. We want to be left in the ark like Noah and his family were.

  1. But the "two men in the field" AND "the two women grinding at the mill" may be something entirely different.

  1. One taken

  2. One left

  1. Both of these verses (men in the field & women grinding at the mill) use the same Greek word for "taken" and "left".

  1. And this word "taken" is different. It is not the same Greek word as "took (them all away)" in verse vs38 about unprepared in Noah's day.

  1. "Taken" - "to receive", "to take with one's self", "to join to one's self", such as "taking" a wife

  1. "Left" - to send away, of a husband divorcing his wife, to give up a thing to a person, to leave, go way from one.

  1. In these two verses, we'd want to be taken (as in a wife). Not left as in a divorcing or giving up his wife.

  1. You can see how hard to understand these verses can be. Jesus using subtlety of words to hide things.

  1. What might Jesus be describing here? Something similar to the two virgins where half are taken by the bridegroom while the other half sleep??? Any other ideas?

Mat 24:42-44

42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh.

  1. Day or hour?

G5610 should be either "hour", "season" or a "part of the day"

Used as "hour" in earlier verses in this chapter.

***Theoretically we should be able to know the day. Noah knew the day***

***Jesus seems to be extremely shrewd with his choice of word.
