Matthew 24

 Mat 24:3

3 And as he sat on the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? (completion of the age)

  1. Vine's Dictionary World, age,ever (G165)

"an age, a period of time," marked in the NT usage by spiritual or moral characteristics, is sometimes translated "world;" the RV marg. always has "age." The phrase "the end of the world" should be rendered "the end of the age," in most places.

Eph 2:7

that in the ages: to come he might show the exceeding riches of his: grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus:

Col 1:26

even the mystery which hath been hid for ages and generations: but now hath it been manifested to his saints,

  1. Why did the disciples ask about the "end of the world" or more accurately "consumation/completion of the age"

Mat 13:39-40

39 and the enemy that sowed them is the devil: and the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered up and burned with fire; so shall it be in the end of the world.

Mat 13:49

So shall it be in the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the righteous,

We think occurs on day 7

Mat 24:4-5

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.

What is the sign of his coming and the end (completion) of the age? Deception

Mat 24:6-10

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet. 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places. 8 But all these things are the beginning of travail. 9 Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name's sake. 10 And then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.

  1. Wars, famines, earthquakes are the beginning of travail/sorrow/birth pangs.

  1. Then they shall deliver you up and kill you? Who?

Not sure. Maybe those who are teaching deception? Physically and spiritually?

  1. Hated of all nations for His namesake? Why?

Prob because at end of NT, the gospel is preached throughout the entire world. Therefore instead of it being just Jews and Romans who hate Christians, it'll be all nations.

  1. What is the result?

Many stumble, betray and hate one another. And what's in vs 11-14.

Mat 24:11-14

11 And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray. 12 And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold. 13 But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.

Jesus seems to be making a point to say that all these other events occur before the age is consummated or completed. So if we look at it in one way he seems to be describing the first six days or the first and second day. Meaning in this example the end of the age this consummated or completed on day three.

Mat 24:15-18

15 When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that readeth understand), 16 then let them that are in Judæa flee unto the mountains: 17 let him that is on the housetop not go down to take out the things that are in his house:  18 and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak.

  1. Vs15 Abomination of desolation?

  1. When you see the abomination of desolation... It is spiritually revealed and not some world event that occurs.

  1. Holy place? In NT, God lives in our heart.

Rom 2:28-29

28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh: 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Compared with:

Act 7:51

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye.

  1. Vs16 Judaea? Means "he shall be praised" Maybe a spiritual name for His people?

  1. Flee unto the mountains?

So at the end of the age either day three or day 7 if you are part of God's spiritual people, you need to climb his spiritual mountain in order to escape the deception that will occur.

  1. Vs17 The one on the housetop not go down to take out the things in his house?

Descend?

Pro 25:24

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,  Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

  1. Vs18 let the one in the field not return back to take his: cloak.

Unsure what this means...maybe it's like this?

Luke 9:62

But Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Mat 24:19-21

19 But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!  20 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on a sabbath:  21 for then shall be great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever shall be.

  1. Vs 19 Woe to them with child and to them that give suck...Woe To Immature believers

  1. Vs20 Pray your flight be not in winter or on Sabbath…

  1. Flight? Variation of vs16 "then let them that are in Judæa flee unto the mountains

  1. Winter?

-John 10: Many thought Jesus was mad and had an evil spirit

-Mat 16: Foul weather day when they could discern the appearance of the sky but not the sign of the times

-Acts 27 time when a large tempest fell on Paul

-Pro 20:4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter;  Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

-Amo 3:15 And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith Jehovah.

  1. Sabbath? - Day 7

  1. Vs21 great tribulation never seen before…

Mat 24:22-23

22 And except those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. 23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ, or, Here; believe it not.

  1. Vs22 - days of tribulation are shortened for the elects sake, otherwise everyone dies?

  1. Vs23 - if any say here is the Christ, or there is the Christ, don't believe them. Why? Maybe because Jesus won't be found in person, only this way:

2Th 1:10

when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.

Mat 24:24-26

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 Behold, I have told you beforehand. 26 If therefore they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the wilderness; go not forth: Behold, he is in the inner chambers; believe it not.

Why? Deception, Jesus will be found in His summer-house. Remember: He smites the winter house with the summer-house.

Mat 24:27-28

27 For as the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 28 Wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

****What/who is lightning (h216) Referenced multiple times in Job 37.

  1. Job 37:1-3

1 Yea, at this my heart trembleth,  And is moved out of its place. 2 Hear, oh, hear the noise of his voice,  And the sound that goeth out of his mouth. 3 He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven,  And his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

Continued...

4 After it a voice roareth;  He thundereth with the voice of his majesty;  And he restraineth not the lightnings when his voice is heard

  1. 2Th 1:10

when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.

  1. Job 37:15

Dost thou know how God layeth his charge upon them,  And causeth the lightning of his cloud to shine?

  1. Zec 9:12(read slowly)

12 Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope: even to-day do I declare that I will render double unto thee.

Who was rendered double? Or given a double portion?

Elisha. Double portion is needed for dealing with the harlot Jezebel.

  1. Zec 9:13

13 For I have bent Judah for me, I have filled the bow with Ephraim; and I will stir up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and will make thee as the sword of a mighty man.

Judah (think Judaea from Mat 24:16) is the bow, Ephraim (means doubly fruitful) is the arrow.

Sons of Zion vs Sons of Greece

Same as "the Summer-house is used to smite the Winter-house"

  1. Zec 9:14

14 And Jehovah shall be seen over them; and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and the Lord Jehovah will blow the trumpet, and will go with whirlwinds of the south.

So arrows of Ephraim (double portion) are shot from the bow of Judah.

The arrows are as lightning. Double portion is the empowered Elisha ministry who fights against the harlot and does many Great signs and miracles on the Earth.

Arrow=lightning=Ephraim=double portion=Elisha=summer house=glorified saints on day 7.

So lightning is a metaphor for Jesus coming to be glorified in His saints on the 7th day.

Mat 24:29-31

29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Actual second coming?

Mat 24:32-33

32 Now from the fig tree learn her parable: when her branch is now become tender, and putteth forth its leaves, ye know that the summer is nigh; 33 even so ye also, when ye see all these things, know ye that he is nigh, even at the doors.

Jesus is EXTREMELY CLEVER with His words!

  1. Branch?

  2. Summer is near? (Summer-house)

Mat 24:34-36

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.

  1. Which generation?

The 42nd generation...those in Christ Jesus

  1. Day nor the hour?

Mat 24:37-39

37 And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

  1. Vs38 Did Noah know when the rains/flood would begin? Yes

  1. When did Noah enter the ark? 7 days beforehand (Gen 7:4)

  1. According to Gen 7:4, Noah didn't know exact time the rain/flood would begin. But he had been preparing for it for a long time. What does this imply about our relationship w Jesus?

  1. Vs39 They did not know till the flood came. Who are "They"? (Gen 7:21)

  1. The flood took them away.

  1. How old was Noah when the flood came?

Gen 7:6

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

Mat 24:40-42

40 Then shall two men be in the field; one is taken, and one is left: 41 two women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left. 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh.

Seems we don't want to be taken like the wicked in the story of Noah. We want to be left like Noah and his family were.

Mat 13:30

Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.

Mat 24:43-44

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through. 44 Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Mat 24:45-51

45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give them their food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath. 48 But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth; 49 and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken; 50 the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, 51 and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
