Matthew 24 - Part 3

 Matt 24:43-44

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through. 44 Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

  1. Vs43 Master of the house

Who is the master of the house?

  1. At times Jesus refers to himself  as the "master of the house". (Read verse…)

Like these:

  1. Mat 21:33

Hear another parable: There was a man that was a householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country.

  1. Mat 10:25

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household!

  1. So therefore if He is referring to himself, then:

Mat 24:43

But know this, that if I Jesus (the master of the house) had known in what watch the thief was coming, I Jesus (he) would have watched, and would not have suffered my (his) house to be broken through.

Does this make sense?

  1. Or….Jesus calls the man whom will provide the upper room for the disciples to eat passover the "master of the house". (Mark 14:13-15) (Read verse…)

Mar 14:13-15

13 And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him; 14 and wheresoever he shall enter in, say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith, Where is my guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15 And he will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready: and there make ready for us.

  1. Or Jesus is making a veiled reference to His body that is on earth when he comes again???? (Read verse…)

  1. Mat 13:52

And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

Every scribe who has been made a disciple is like a man that is a householder (master of the house)

  1. Read again:

Mat 10:25

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household!

A disciple will be AS HIS teacher. The master of the house is called Beelzebub, you (like the master of the house) will also be called Beelzebub.

  1. Vs43 "if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming"?

  1. Who is the thief? Jesus?

Rev 16:15

(Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.)

  1. Which watch the thief was coming?

What is a watch? - per a commentary: the time (of night) during which guard was kept, a watch, i.e. a period of time during which part of the guard was on duty. The Romans had a custom of dividing the night into four watches. The Hebrews may have divided the night watches into only three.

So each watch could last three or four hours.

  1. Interesting sister verse

Luk 12:36-39

36 and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him. 37  Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: (verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them.) 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

***It's not entirely sure in this parable in Luke whether the max amount of watches is 3 or 4. Jesus says He could come in the 2nd watch or the 3rd watch. In this parable, the 3rd is probably the last and final watch. But you can't say for sure.

Difference in this parable??

Maybe in this version of the parable, Jesus comes and sups with those on earth who are watching??

  1. IF WATCHES we're mentioned in the OT, how many would there be? 3

  1. Why? The OT was all about the Hebrews, not Rome.

  1. Where is Rome/Romans found? NT. So we could expect either 3 or 4 watches.

B. Examples of OT watches (per Barnes):

  1. 1st watch

Lam 2:19

Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches;  Pour out thy heart like water before the face of the Lord:  Lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger at the head of every street.

  1. 2nd watch

Jdg 7:19

So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

  1. 3rd watch

Exo 14:24-25

24 And it came to pass in the morning watch, that Jehovah looked forth upon the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and discomfited the host of the Egyptians. 25 And he took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for Jehovah fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

In Lu 12:38, Jesus says He might come in the second or third watch. So be ready.

  1. What about this verse?

Mar 13:35

Watch therefore: for ye know not when the lord of the house cometh, whether at even (1st), or at midnight (2nd), or at cockcrowing (3rd), or in the morning (4th)

How many are there? 4

Are they watches?

2. What about the Fourth watch?

  1. ***What is significant about the 4th watch? It is also the last and final watch of the night from the perspective of the Romans. Just like the 3rd watch seems to be in the OT (or to the Hebrews).

  1. Which day does Jesus come? 7th

  1. Which night watch does say he may again? 2nd or 3rd

***So we can assume that this represents the same time period. The time when Jesus comes again!

So the 2nd or 3rd watch from the perspective of the Hebrews correlates to the 4th watch of the Romans.

So it seems that Jesus comes again on day 7 correlates to the Hebrew second or third watch of the night. Or possibly the Roman 4th watch of the night.

***So Day 7 = 2nd/3rd watch of night (Hebrews)  = 4th watch of the night (Romans)

B. But first, is there a verse that connects "a 1000 year/day to a watch of the night"?

Psa 90:4

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past,  And as a watch in the night.

Day = 1000 years = a watch in the night????

If a 1000 years is equal to yesterday, and a watch in the night. So the third/and or 4th watch could be the watch that Jesus says He will come in.

C. So are there scriptures that refer to the 4th watch of the night also? Yes

**Keep in mind that before we read them, Jesus seems to show up on day 7 differently than those who are watching anticipate. Like Jesus in John 21 (whom the disciples didn't recognize). Or like lightning, or like the wise in Dan 12 who shined like the brightness of the firmament. Or like the saints in whom Jesus is glorified in on that day (from 2 Thes 1:10)...

Mat 14:25-26

25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

Oddities of this 4th watch appearance:

  1. walks on sea

  2. disciples troubled

  3. Thought is was a ghost

  4. Cried out in fear

  5. Immediately Jesus says be of good cheer, don't be afraid. It is me!

***Is it a coincidence this event occurs on the 4th watch, or on day 7? No

Mar 6:48-51

 48 And seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them: 49 but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. 51 And he went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves;

Oddities of the 4th watch in this parable?

  1. Wind was contrary to them?

Wind?

  1. Jesus walked on the sea

  1. Jesus would have walked on by?

Neglect them?

  1. Disciples thought it was a ghost

A spirit or spectre

  1. Disciples cried out

  1. They all see him and are troubled

***Again, is this coincidental that Jesus appears during the 4th watch in this fashion?

No. He is telling us with consistency how he will come on day 7.

Unexpectedly during a storm in a way that will frighten his disciples. Even seemingly as an adversary.

Re-read

Matthew 24:43

But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through.

  1. Vs43 The master of the house should be watching. To determine the day/watch we are in?

  1. When Jesus comes again as the thief, what does he break into? His own house

  1. "To break into" - to penetrate burglariously: - break through (up).

  1. Mat 6:19-21

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 for where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also.

Who are thieves able to break into and steal from?

Those with treasures upon the earth

Who are thieves not able to break into and steal from?

Those who lay up for themselves treasures in heaven

  1. Luk 12:34-40 (we read earlier)

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning; 36 and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him. 37  Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through. 40  Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

  1. 'upon the earth'?

Luk 21:34-35

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare: 35 for so shall it come upon all them that dwell on the face of all the earth.

  1. Luk 18:8

I say unto you, that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Mat 24:44

Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Vs44 Jesus comes in an "hour" when you don't think He will.

-Time, season, part of the day

Mat 24:45-47

45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give them their food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.

  1. Vs 45 notice the difference btw this verse and vs 43

Mat 24:48-49

48 But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth; 49 and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken;

  1. What constitutes an evil servant?

  1. Vs48 Jesus is delaying His coming

  1. Vs49 Beats his fellow servants?

1Co 8:12-13

12 And thus, sinning against the brethren, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, ye sin against Christ. 13 Wherefore, if meat causeth my brother to stumble, I will eat no flesh for evermore, that I cause not my brother to stumble.

  1. Vs49 Eat and drink with the drunken

1Th 5:5-7

5 for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; 6 so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night.

Mat 24:50-51

50 the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, 51 and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
