Hell
In NT
tartaroo
Hades
Gehenna
Gehenna in OT is called Hinnom
Review it's location
Review it's OT purpose - trash dump w fire
Review Molech/Topheth
Review God words which he spoke 3x's
"I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin." Hell
God changes the name from valley of the son of Hinnom to the valley of slaughter
In Zec 11, God takes the liberty of feeding the flock of slaughter
This takes us out of the OT and into the NT where we will look at the usage of Himmon (or it's NT counterpart, Gehenna)

Gehenna in NT continued…
Mat 5:22 (Jesus is speaking to the disciples)
but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell (Gehenna) of fire.
Let's look at the context:
Mat 5:17-19
17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Vs17 Jesus speaks here and says He didn't come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it.
Vs18 Jesus says that the law even in the least shall not be destroyed until its purpose has been accomplished or finished
Vs19 Jesus is talking about the ten commandments.
Vs19 if you break one of the ten commandments and then teach others to break it, you shall be least in the kingdom of heaven.
-Who are they? Teachers? Religious teachers?
-These people will still get into kingdom of heaven??? Yes but are considered least
Vs19 but if you DO the 10 commandments and teach others to DO them also, you shall be great in the kingdom of heaven
-Who are these? Certainly religious TEACHERS?
-Those that DO and teach others to DO will be great in the kingdom of heaven
Mat 5:20
20 For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Vs20 in order for you to get into the king of heaven, YOUR righteousness has to exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. Because they aren't even going to get into the kingdom of heaven.
Where does this come from and what is their crime? Jesus is getting ready to tell us
Mat 5:21
21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Vs21 Thou shalt not kill? Huh? What is Jesus talking about?
He is referring to the 10 commandments. In particular, the 6th commandment
Look at the OT verses:
Exo 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.
Deu 5:17 Thou shalt not kill.
But look back at Vs21. Jesus says more;
"Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment"
Where was this ever spoken? It wasn't. Jesus is not quoting from the OT but from the teachings of the scribes and Pharisees.
What is the crime of the scribes and Pharisees? Adding or changing God's word?
Mat 5:22
but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.
Vs22 Jesus seems to be making crystal clear the punishment for the 6th commandment "thou shalt not murder" which the scribes and Pharisees have taken the liberty of adding to.
He does this by breaking down "thou shalt not murder" into at least three smaller degrees
Firstly, just being angry with his brother puts you "in danger of the judgment".
What crime did the Scribes and Pharisees say put you in danger of the judgement?
Murder. Now it's anger with your brother
Secondly, whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. (Sanhedrin or judge)
Raca - O empty one, that is, thou worthless, vain
Thirdly, whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell (Gehenna) of fire.
Fool - G3474 moros - dull, sluggish, stupid, impious
Ironically Jesus calls the scribes and Pharisees "fools" in Mat 23:17 & 19
Questions?
So why does Jesus condemn a person who calls someone a "fool" to Gehenna or hell?
And why are these a subsection of "thou shalt not kill"?
Or is He changing it so murder also include your thoughts, and not only just your actions?
Mat 5:29
And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell (Gehenna).
On the surface: If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. Its better to lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into gehenna .
Here is the context:
Mat 5:27-28
27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
So the context is in relation to another one of the 10 commandments, the 7th commandment: Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Vs27 Jesus seems to be redefining "thou shalt not commit adultery"
Vs28 Now if you look on a woman to lust after her, you've committed adultery already in your heart.
Now let's reread verse 29.
Vs29 And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell (Gehenna).
Why only the right eye?
What about the left eye?
And what might it mean that it is profitable that one of our members should perish so their whole body isnt cast into hell (gehenna)?
Zec 11:17
Woe to the worthless shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.
What does the right eye represent?
The worthless shepherd is unfaithful to the flock. He leaves the flock. The right eye shall be utterly darkened.
What did the right eye/worthless shepherd do? It left the flock.
So what kind of adultery does he commit? Spiritual adultery
So what might this mean?
Mat 5:29
And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell (Gehenna).
Cast out that part of the worthless shepherds that have committed spiritual adultery. So the entire flock doesn't go to hell (Gehenna).
Jesus takes this commandment and adds the spiritual application of it.
Mat 5:30
And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell (Gehenna).
Here is the context:
Mat 5:27-28
27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
The context is obviously still adultery.
Vs27 Jesus continues redefining "thou shalt not commit adultery"
vs30
And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell.
Does Jesus really want us to cut off our right hand and cast it away? No
And what might it mean that it is profitable that one of our members should perish so their whole body isnt cast into hell (gehenna)?
By and large, the right hand is spoken of overwhelmingly as the belonging to God and referring to his power and strength. But in this instance it is referring to something totally different.
Psa 144:7-8
7 Stretch forth thy hand from above; Rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters, Out of the hand of strange children; 8 Whose mouth speaketh deceit, And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
Psa 144:11 (spoken again)
11 Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hand of aliens, Whose mouth speaketh deceit, And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
Psa 144:12-13 (when?)
12 When our sons shall be as plants grown up in their youth, And our daughters as corner-stones hewn after the fashion of a palace; 13 When our garners are full, affording all manner of store, And our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields;
Mat 13:30 (at the harvest)
Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.
Mat 13:43 (then the righteous will shine forth)
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears, let him hear.
Psa 144:14-15 (after the tares are removed)
14 When our oxen are well laden; When there is no breaking in, and no going forth, And no outcry in our streets: 15 Happy is the people that is in such a case; Yea, happy is the people whose God is Jehovah.
Psa 26:9-10
9 Gather not my soul with sinners, Nor my life with men of blood; 10 In whose hands is wickedness, And their right hand is full of bribes.
What does the right hand represent?
How is Jesus redefining adultery? Again it seems to be spiritual adultery instead of just adultery btw husband and wife? Ironically enough, what does Jesus do when he catches a woman actually committing adultery?
Reread Psalms 26:1-5 - Psalm of David
Vs4 I have not sat with men of falsehood
Vs4 I will not go in with disassemblers
Vs5 I hate the assembly of evil doers
Vs5 I will not sit with the wicked
Who does Jesus hang with? a friend of publicans and sinners, hangs out with winebibbers
Therefore, this Psalm takes on new meaning now. Who are the wicked, the evildoers, the man of falsehoods, and the disassemblers? The religious leaders
Again it is easy to see that the right hand belongs to the spiritual harlot, religious leaders of the day. And Jesus is saying that right hand of the religious harlot needs to be cut off or the whole body of the religious harlot will be cast into Gehenna
So Jesus references Gehenna in Mat 5 three times. The first is in reference to thou shall not kill. And the second and third times are in reference to spiritual adultery.
