Elisha - Part 3

 Review

The rise of the double portion Elisha and the uncanny parallel to the 2nd coming of Jesus which is hinted at all over the place in the Old and New Testament.

Is 61 - Day 7

2b day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3  to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

So Elisha typifies Jesus' second coming and heals the water, which represents Jesus word, and His people, it won't be corrupted again.

Also day 7th is the day of vengeance where Jesus comes in anger as a bear who was robbed of her cubs.

In the same way, the double-portion Elisha ministry comes fiercely against the anti-Christ spirit which is found plainly in the vineyards of God. Or the wayward church that is FULL of the spirit of antichrist.***

2Ki 3:1-6

1 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years. 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. 4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

Summary

  1. Ahab's son Jehoram begins his reign as the king of Israel in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.

Jehoram will reign 12 years

  1. Jehoram was considered evil in God's eyes. But not as evil as his parents.

  1. Who were his parents? Ahab and Jezebel

  2. Why? He put away the pillars/obelisks of Baal

  1. But Jehoram clings to the sin of Jeroboam.

Who is Jeroboam?

King of Israel when God split the nation of Israel into two parts:

Israel and Judah

What was the sin of Jeroboam?

1Ki 12:28-31

  1.  He made two calves of gold; and he said unto them, behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt

  1.  You don't need to go up to Jerusalem anymore.

  1.  I'll put one in Beth-el, and the other in Dan. Both in the newly formed version of Israel. So the people didn't need to go back to Jerusalem, which is in the newly formed territory of Judah.

  1.  This became a sin;

  1.  He also made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, that were not of the sons of Levi.

  1. Jehoram  is considered evil but not quite as evil as Ahab and Jezebel. I guess God has degrees of evil that he judges by?

  1. It seems that once Ahab dies, the neighboring king of Moab, Mesha rebels against Jehoram, the new king of Israel.

  1. Moab seemed to have been a vassal state (or subordinate) of Ahab and Israel. Giving Ahab the wool of 100,000 rams and 100,000 lambs.

Now that Ahab is dead, what might Mesha and Moab be doing?

Testing Jehoram in an effort to break their subordinate status.

  1. Jehoram goes out of Samaria and musters all Israel.

  1. What is Samaria? Capital of Israel

  2. Musters all Israel? Why? To get their support

2 Kings 3:7-10

7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses. 8 And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way of the wilderness of Edom. 9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.

Summary

  1. Jehoram sends word to Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, telling him that Moab has rebelled against Israel. And will he go to battle with him?

Wonder why he does this? Maybe Jehoram unsure of himself?

  1. What is Jehoshaphat's answer?

Yes we will go.

  1. Why might Jehoram say to Jehoshaphat, "Which way shall we go up?" It's Jehoram's fight, right?

Seems to be unsure of himself

  1. Which way does Jehoshaphat tell him that they should go?

Through the wilderness of Edom

Share map of "Edom.png"

  1. So Israel and Judah decide to travel thru the wilderness of Edom and in the process Edom joins the fight too.

Why?

  1. The price for traveling thru Edom?

  2. Was Edom a vassal state of Judah or Israel?

  1. So Israel, Judah and Edom make a 7 day journey through the "wilderness of Edom" (see Edom.png)

What do they find? There is no water for the armies or the animals.

  1. Who is Edom?

"Edom" is the nickname of a man, originally called Esau, who is described in the Book of Genesis in the Bible's Old Testament. "Edom" was also used as the name of the place where Esau went to live, the hilly part of southwest Jordan. Esau's name was changed to Edom when he moved to that land.

  1. What is the significance of Edom/Esau?

Edom" means "red" and was the name given to Esau when he sold his birthright as a son of Abraham. Since all who walk by faith are sons of Abraham, this means selling their birthright to salvation and its benefits. Gen 25:30

He gave up his inheritance as the first born son by selling his birthright to his younger brother Jacob for…bread and pottage (soup).

Gen 25:34

And Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: so Esau despised his birthright.

The spiritual seed of Esau are Edomites who walk in the steps of their father and have sold their birthright as Christians by walking after the flesh and persecuting their brother, Jacob/Israel, the chosen as spoken in Ezekiel 35 and Obadiah. Jacob and Esau were both sons of Abraham but Esau received a root of bitterness that also defiled his seed. Part of Christianity walks in his steps today, persecuting their brethren. Heb.12:14-17

Heb 12:16-17

16 lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright. 17 For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought it diligently with tears.

2 Kings 3:9-11

9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab. 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.

Summary

  1. From this point, we want to see the spiritual picture that is being presented. A riddle. Does anyone see hints of it?

  1. Kings of Israel, Judah and Edom on their seven day journey - think Day 7 as a spiritual picture

  1. No water on day 7 for the armies nor the animals.

Luk 18:8

I say unto you, that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

  1. As a spiritual picture, what does water represent?

The word of God. Remember bad water a few chapters back when Elijah put salt into it to heal it?

  1. Who is the only king looking for God?

Jehoshaphat

  1. Notice who is there on Day 7?

The double portion - Elisha, just like we'd expect him to be.

2 Kings 3:12-15

12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of Jehovah is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay; for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab. 14 And Elisha said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. 15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Jehovah came upon him.

Summary

  1. Vs12 All three kings go down to Elisha.

  1. Vs12 But Jehoshaphat is the only one that recognizes that the word of God is with Elisha. Maybe recognizes the double portion.

  1. Vs13 Elisha lashes out at the king of Israel.

Why? Both he and Elijah were prophets for Israel and know how wicked Jehoram is. Certainly would have know the reputation of Ahab and Jezebel.

  1. Vs14 Elisha says, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand…

What is Elisha implying? That he is standing in the presence of God.

Where is God? His Throne room?

Who else stands in His throne room? Overcomers:

Rev 3:12

He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out thence no more: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and mine own new name.

**So the double portion - Elisha - is an overcomer

  1. Vs14 Which king does Elisha acknowledge?

Only Jehoshaphat, he is harsh with everyone else

So Elisha - double portion - overcomer don't waste time w those who don't acknowledge God

  1. Vs15 But now bring me a minstrel. Any other translations?

Septuagint:

2Ki 3:15

And now fetch me a harper. And it came to pass, as the harper harped, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.

  1. Compare with Rev 14:1-4

Rev 14:1-2

1 And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from heaven (God?), as the voice of many waters (Jesus?), and as the voice of a great thunder (who's voice?): and the voice which I heard was as the voice of harpers harping with their harps (who's voice?)

Who's voices??

Rev 14:3

and they sing as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders: and no man could learn the song save the hundred and forty and four thousand, even they that had been purchased out of the earth.

So like Elisha, they stand before the throne AND are associated with harpers harping

2 Kings 3:16-19

16 And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, Make this valley full of trenches. 17 For thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts. 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of Jehovah: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand. 19 And ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

Summary

  1. What is Elisha doing here in these four verses? Vs16-19?

He is prophesying.

###

  1.  So what does the minstrel's playing or harpers harping metaphor mean?

It seems to be a metaphor for prophesying.

**So Elisha and the 144,000 from Rev 14 both prophesy.

  1. Vs16 Make this valley full of trenches.

Why? To catch the water which is about to fall.

  1. Vs17 "You shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts.

  1. Why won't they see the wind or rain? Because it is a spiritual rain that will fall.

  1. The valley will be filled with water. What water? The pure word of God, not the polluted word of God.

Remember how Elisha cleansed the water in the previous chapter?

  1. "Ye shall drink, you, your cattle and your beast…" The 7th Day pouring out…

  1. Vs18 "And this is but a light thing in the sight of Jehovah: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand."

  1. Who might the Moabites represent in this passage?

  1. Maybe this is a metaphor for the ultimate battle in Revelation. Armagedom?

Armageddon” is another of the symbols used in the bible, and it is associated with the great and final struggle with which the present age ends, when the kingdom of Christ rises victoriously over all enemies, establishing world-wide righteousness and peace. When we consider the battle of Armageddon, we are not, therefore, to expect any gathering of the nations literally to the hill of Megiddo. Rather we are to look for that which is symbolized by that place, and understand that the place is representative symbolically of those CONDITIONS and CIRCUMSTANCES which shall prevail in the political, economic and spiritual realms to bring this present evil age to a close.

  1. Vs19 "And ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones."

Meaning? Everything will be cleansed, healed and made new on the 7th day, in particular with Jesus use of the

2 Kings 3:20-23

20 And it came to pass in the morning, about the time of offering the oblation, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water. 21 Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border. 22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood: 23 and they said, This is blood; the kings are surely destroyed, and they have smitten each man his fellow: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

Summary

  1. Vs20 2Ki And it came to pass in the morning, about the time of offering the oblation, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

  1. In the morning, about the time of the offering of oblation? Day 7 rising of the sun.

  1. There came water by way of Edom and the country was filled with water

The pure water of the word.

  1. Vs21 Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.

Metaphor of the events of day 7. Any ideas?

  1. Rev 16:13-16

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, as it were frogs: 14 for they are spirits of demons, working signs; which go forth unto the kings of the whole world, to gather them together unto the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.) 16 And they gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew Har-Magedon.

  1. Rev 19:17-19

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in mid heaven, Come and he gathered together unto the great supper of God; 18 that ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses and of them that sit thereon, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, and small and great. 19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat upon the horse, and against his army.

  1. Burden of Moab - Isaiah 15

Isa 15:1

The burden of Moab. For in a night Ar (a city) of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nought; for in a night Kir (wall) of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nought.

Isa 15:9

For the waters of Dimon (riverbed) are full of blood; for I will bring yet more upon Dimon (riverbed), a lion upon them of Moab that escape, and upon the remnant of the land.

  1. Vs22-23 As the Moabites arose early that morning, the sun cast its rays on the water, and to the Moabites, the water across from them appeared to be red like blood. 23 So they concluded, “This must be blood! The kings must have had one mighty big fight and each man killed the other! So let’s go get the battle spoil, Moab!”

2 Kings 3:24-27

24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites. 25 And they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir-hareseth only they left the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it. 26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not. 27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

Summary

  1. Vs24 Israelites rush into Moab, smiting the land. The same way that the armies of God conquer in Rev 16.

Rev 16:16-19

16 And they gathered them together into the place which is called in Hebrew Har-Magedon. 17 And the seventh poured out his bowl upon the air; and there came forth a great voice out of the temple, from the throne, saying, It is done: 18 and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men upon the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

  1. Vs25

  1. And they beat down the cities

  1. on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it

  1. and they stopped all the fountains of water

  2. Cut down all the good trees

  1. until in Kir-hareseth only they left the stones thereof; however the slingers went about it, and smote it.

Kir-hareseth - seems to be a stronghold in Moab which requires a little more sustained effort

Jer 48:36

Therefore my heart soundeth for Moab like pipes, and my heart soundeth like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: therefore the abundance that he hath gotten is perished.

Maybe they trusted in riches.

Jer 48 has alot to say about the judgement of Moab

  1. Vs26 When the king of Moab (Mesha) realized that the battle was going strongly against him, he took 700 expert swordsmen to attempt to break through to the king of Edom, but was unable to do so.

  1. Desperate attempt to regain control?

  1. Maybe he thought Edom was the weak link?

  1. Vs27 as a last resource, Mesha took his first born son, and offered him as a burnt-offering to appease the manifest anger of his god Chemosh, and obtain his aid against his enemies. This act was thoroughly in accordance with Moabitish notions.

And there was great indignation against Israel - Either the Israelites were indignant with themselves, or the men of Judah and the Edomites were indignant at the Israelites for having caused the pollution of this sacrifice, and the siege was relinquished.
