Jezebel - 2 Kings 9 - Part 6

 2Ki 9:1-3

1 And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this vial of oil in thy hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. 2 And when thou comest thither, look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber. 3 Then take the vial of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, Thus saith Jehovah, I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not.

Summary

  1. What is happening? Elisha has now taken over for Elijah.

  1. Remember when Elijah ran away from Jezebel and ended up at Mt Horeb?

  1. After the wind, earthquake and fire?

  1. God told Elijah

  1. Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel

  2. Anoint Hazael to be king of Syria

  3. Anoint Elisha to take your place

  1. Which of these did Elijah complete? Only anointed Elisha

  1. Why? We didn't read these verses last week, but:

1Ki 21:28-29

28 And the word of Jehovah came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house.

  1. Seems that God decided to wait on the annointing of Jehu (and Hazael).

  1. But Elijah did anoint Elisha before he was taken up to heaven.

2Ki 2:9-13

9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I am taken from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof! And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

So Elisha receives a double portion, a double anointing from God.

Why?

I think it requires a double anointing to come against Jezebel, the harlot in Revelation.

With that said, let's understand that what will be reading (in a type and shadow) is the second coming of Jesus on day 7

Remember Jezebel-Babylon-Harlot are all references to the same thing. The stealing of God's vineyard where herbs are grown instead.

Noticed what is dished out to Babylon in Rev 18

Rev 18:6

Render unto her even as she rendered, and double unto her the double according to her works: in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double.

7. Vs1-2 Elisha tells one of the sons of the prophets to go to Ramoth-Gilead with oil to find Jehu.

8. Vs3 Then separate Jehu from his mates, pour the oil over his head and anoint him the king of Israel.

9. Vs3 Then open the door and leave. Don't linger.

2 Kings 9:4-10

4 So the young man, even the young man the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. 5 And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of us all? And he said, To thee, O captain. 6 And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of Jehovah, even over Israel. 7 And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of Jehovah, at the hand of Jezebel. 8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel. 9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.

Summary

  1. Vs4-5 The prophet went to Ramoth-Gilead, and got Jehu's attention.

  1. Vs6 The prophet seems to separate Jehu from the rest of his men and he pours the oil on Jehu's head and says "I have anointed you King over God's people, Israel".

  1. Jehu means "Jehovah is He"

Who is Jehu?

Jehu was a commander in the army of Ahab in the northern kingdom of Israel. Jehu was the son of Jehoshaphat, although he is more commonly mentioned as son of Nimshi, his grandfather, perhaps because Nimshi was more well-known. Jehu’s God-given task was to obliterate the house of Ahab along with the worship of Baal that pervaded Israel at the time.

Jehu was a reformer of sorts who was used by God to clean up the mess that Ahab had made. But he is also a type and shadow of Jesus second coming in Revelation who destroys the beast and the harlot.

God also chose Jehu to be the king of Israel.

Remember: Jehu means "Jehovah is He"

  1. This chapter is also a metaphor of God's judgment that appears in Revelation 17-19 against the beast, the false prophet and the harlot. So Jehu is a metaphor of God's wrath towards these systems that appear in their totality in Revelation 19.

  1. Vs7 Prophet con't "Smite the household of your master Ahab, so I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, as well as the blood of all of the servants of the LORD that has been spilled at Jezebel’s hand"

  1. Vs8 Prophet con't "The entire household of Ahab will die, and I will cut off from Ahab every male person in Israel, whether imprisoned or surviving."

  1. Vs9 Prophet con't "I will make the household of Ahab like the household of Nebat’s son Jeroboam and the household of Ahijah’s son Baasha."

  1. Vs10 Prophet con't "Furthermore, the dogs will eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel. There will be no burial for her.’” Then he opened the door and left.

Elijah told Ahab:

1Ki 21:23

And of Jezebel also spake Jehovah, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel.

2 Kings 9:11-13

11 Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man and what his talk was. 12 And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, I have anointed thee king over Israel. 13 Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew the trumpet, saying, Jehu is king.

Summary

  1. Vs11 Seems the men with Jehu we're eager to know what the crazy prophet told him. Jehu says "you know the man and his talk"

  1. Vs12 Their response "yeah we know, it's false (or wrong), but tell us anyway".

  1. Vs12 Jehu responds "the Lord has anointed me king of Israel"

  1. Vs13 Evidently, the men blow the trumpet and declare, "Jehu is king!". Why? Not sure why now they believe the prophet??

Does the men blowing the trumpet and saying 'Jehu is king' ("Jehovah is he" is king) have spiritual end time significance? Not sure

2 Kings 9:14-16

14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram was keeping Ramoth-gilead, he and all Israel, because of Hazael king of Syria; 15 but king Joram was returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, If this be your mind, then let none escape and go forth out of the city, to go to tell it in Jezreel. 16 So Jehu rode in a chariot, and went to Jezreel; for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram.

Summary

  1. Vs14 Jehu, knowing that King Joram, son of Ahab, had recently gone to Jezreel to recover from wounds in a battle against the Syrians.

Again share 'Ramoth-Gilead.jpeg'

  1. Vs15 Jehu ordered his men to seal the of Ramoth-Gilead (?) so that no one could go to Jezreel to alert Joram of Jehu’s anointing.

Why? Guess he wants a surprise attack?

  1. Vs16 Jehu rides to Jezreel, where not only King Joram is, but King Ahaziah of Judah is also there visiting. (2 for 1)

2 Kings 9:17-21

17 Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take a horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace? 18 So there went one on horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the watchman told, saying, The messenger came to them, but he cometh not back. 19 Then he sent out a second on horseback, who came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. 20 And the watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not back: and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth furiously. 21 And Joram said, Make ready. And they made ready his chariot. And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot, and they went out to meet Jehu, and found him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite.

Summary

  1. Vs17 The watchman in Jezreel see Jehu as he comes. Joram sends out a horseman to ask "Have you come in peace?"

  1. Vs18 The horseman says to Jehu "have you come in peace?"

  1. Jehu says "what do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me".

  1. The watchman reports that "the horseman arrived but hasn't returned"

  1. Vs19 Joram sends a second horseman who says "have you come in peace?"

  1. Jehu says the same thing as the "what do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me".

  1. Vs20 Again, the watchman from Jezreel reports to Joram that "the horseman arrived but hasn't returned. Moreover, the chariot driver is driving furiously"

Remember, Jehu is a metaphor for the end time wrath of God in day 7 in the midst of Jesus second coming...

Furiously (H7697) - madness, craziness, from root of "to be mad"

This word is used 3x's in the OT:

Notice the end time metaphors used in each passage.

Zec 12:3-4

3 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples; all that burden themselves with it shall be sore wounded; and all the nations of the earth shall be gathered together against it. 4 In that day, saith Jehovah, I will smite every horse with terror, and his rider with madness; and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the peoples with blindness.

Also used in this verse:

Deu 28:26-29

26 And thy dead body shall be food unto all birds of the heavens, and unto the beasts of the earth; and there shall be none to frighten them away. 27 Jehovah will smite thee with the boil of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scurvy, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. 28 Jehovah will smite thee with madness, and with blindness, and with astonishment of heart; 29 and thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and robbed alway, and there shall be none to save thee.

  1. Vs21 King Joram and King Ahaziah each ride out in his chariot to meet Jehu. Are they going out to meet or to fight against Jehu?

Not with hostility. Jehu is the commander of their troop, certainly in Ramoth-Gilead.

Where do they find Jehu? In the portion of Naboth the Jezreel.

What is the significance? Nathoth's vineyard is symbolic for the church. Jesus comes for his church only to find it hijacked and stolen by Ahab and Jezebel. Now we know why he comes "furiously" (mad)

Notice: Jehu/Jesus comes for His church!

2 Kings 9:22-26

22 And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many? 23 And Joram turned his hands, and fled, and said to Ahaziah, There is treachery, O Ahaziah. 24 And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength, and smote Joram between his arms; and the arrow went out at his heart, and he sunk down in his chariot. 25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain, Take up, and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite; for remember how that, when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father, Jehovah laid this burden upon him: 26 Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith Jehovah; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith Jehovah. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground, according to the word of Jehovah.

Summary

  1. Vs22 Joram still doesn't understand and wonders whether Jehu comes in peace.

  1. Vs22 Jehu (Jesus) identifies Jezebel as a whore (harlot) who practices witchcraft (sorcery)

  1. Jezebel is the wayward church who practices witchcraft or sorcery.

  1. Witchcraft (h3785) also means sorcery

  1. Remember, Jehu/Jesus comes for his church (Naboth's vineyard).

  1. Therefore when we read of the second coming of Jesus, it's all about his disciples, not the lukewarm not the world.

  1. Therefore, Revelation is all about his REAL church (vineyard).

  1. So if "witchcraft or sorcery" is mentioned in Revelation, who is it referring to?

The Jezebel influenced church (or the hijacked vineyard of Naboth)

Let read:

Rev 9:21 (read vs20 too)

21 and they repented not of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Rev 18:23-24

23 and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth; for with thy sorcery were all the nations deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth.

  1. Vs23 Both the King of Israel and the King of Judah are unprepared for Jehu's (Jesus) coming.

  1. Vs24 Jehu (Jesus) draws his bow and shoots Joram completely through with an arrow.

Significance?

  1. Rev 6:2

And I saw, and behold, a white horse, and he that sat thereon had a bow; and there was given unto him a crown: and he came forth conquering, and to conquer.

  1. Rev 19:11

And I saw the heaven opened; and behold, a white horse, and he that sat thereon called Faithful and True; and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

  1. Vs25 Jehu says to Bidkar his captain "pick up Joram and throw him in the field of Naboth.

  1. Bidkar -  means "with a stab. What do you stab with? A sword or the Word.

  1. I believe it is a reference to this verse:

Rev 19:21

and the rest were killed with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, even the sword which came forth out of his mouth: and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

Notice: "even the sword"

  1. Vs25-26 Fulfilling the 'word' from Elijah in 1 Kings 21:24

  1. 1Ki 21:24

Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat.

  1. Does Joram die in the city or in the field?

The field. Symbolic the judgement of the end time beast (in Rev 19:17-21) where the birds are filled with the flesh of their dead bodies.

Judgement of the beast..

2 Kings 9:27-29

27 But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden-house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, Smite him also in the chariot: and they smote him at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there. 28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David. 29 And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah.

Summary

  1. Vs27 King Azahiah see what is occurring, hops in his chariot and flees with Jehu (Jesus) following after him.

  1. Vs27 Jehu orders them to kill Ahaziah in his chariot. They wound him at the acsent of Gur which is by Ibleam.

Share "Ramoth-Gilead.jpeg"

  1. Vs27 Ahaziah continues on to Megiddo where he dies. Significance? Armeggedon

  1. Vs28 His servants take his body and bury him in Jerusalem. I understand the spiritual significance but naturally speaking, doesn't this sabotage your relationship with Judah, your neighbor?

2 Kings 9:30-37

30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her eyes, and attired her head, and looked out at the window. 31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Is it peace, thou Zimri, thy master's murderer? 32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. 33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down; and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trod her under foot. 34 And when he was come in, he did eat and drink; and he said, See now to this cursed woman, and bury her; for she is a king's daughter. 35 And they went to bury her; but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands. 36 Wherefore they came back, and told him. And he said, This is the word of Jehovah, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall the dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel; 37 and the body of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel, so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

Summary

  1. Vs30 When Jehu gets back to Jezreel, Jezebel has put makeup on her eyes and some type of head dress on her head. Why? To make herself look royal? Or beautiful? The harlot?

  1. Vs31 Jezebel says from the window "Had Zimri peace, who slew his master??"

1 Kings 16 details the treasonous way Zimri became king of Israel, his brief reign of seven days, and his suicide before he could be assassinated by the next king. She seems to be trying to taunt him.

  1. Vs32 Jehu lifts his head to the window and says "who is on my side?" Two or three eunuchs look out to him.

  1. Vs33 Jehu says "throw her down". So they throw her down.

  1. Jezebel thrown down like Babylon was cast down in:

Rev 18:21

And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down...

  1. Her blood was sprinkled on the wall. And on the horses.

Rev 14:19-20

19 And the angel cast his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and cast it into the winepress, the great winepress, of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and there came out blood from the winepress, even unto the bridles of the horses, as far as a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

  1. She was trodden under foot.

Isa 28:3

The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot:

  1. Vs34 Jehu says "go and see to this cursed woman, bury her because she was a king's daughter".

Did he forget the word of the prophet in vs10? "And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her"

  1. Vs35 Seems Jehu's men were sent to bury her, they found nothing left except the skull, feet and palms of hands.

  1. Vs36 Upon returning and telling Jehu, he replies "Elijah said 'In the portion of Jezreel shall the dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel"

Had he forgotten? Unsure

  1. Vs37 And the carcass of Jezabel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the portion of Jezrael, so that they shall not say, This is Jezabel.

  1. "face of the field"

him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat (Rev 19:21)

About Babylon

Rev 18:20-21

20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets; for God hath judged your judgment on her.

Thru the Elisha ministry!!

  1. "so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel."

Babylon is gone forever!

Rev 18:21

And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all.
