Daniel 9:17-19
17 Now therefore, O our God, hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. 18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies' sake. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God, because thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
Summary
Vs 17 - Listen to my prayers. Shine upon your desolate sanctuary for Your sake.
(Implied: Not based on our efforts, or lack of our efforts)
Vs 18 Please listen, God. See our desolations, show great mercy on us, for we aren't righteous.
Vs 19. Hear us and forgive us. Don't delay. Your city and people are called by your name.
Harken (v17), hear (v18), hear (v19)
Daniel 9:20-23
20 And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he instructed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.
Summary
Vs 20 While Daniel is praying and confessing his sins and the sins of his people…
Vs 21 Gabriel appears whom Daniel had seen at the beginning of his chazon vision back in Dan 8:15-16
Vision (chazon) is 2300 days and then the sanctuary will be cleansed.
***Gabriel also spoke w Zacharias (John the Baptist father) and Mary in NT
Vs23 Gabriel said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding.
Vs23 Gabriel says, "when you (Daniel) first began praying, the word had come forth (from God) and I have come to tell you".
You are greatly loved (precious) to God.
Look at vs Dan 9:4
***vs 4 "God keeps his covenant...with them that love Him…."
Gabriel says "consider the matter, and understand the vision (mareh)
..."about the "mareh"
Understanding about the "mareh"
Previously, 11-12 years prior in 551 B.C...
Dan 8:26-27
26 And the vision of the evenings and mornings which hath been told is true: but shut thou up the vision (chazon); for it belongeth to many days to come. 27 And I, Daniel, fainted, and was sick certain days; then I rose up, and did the king's business: and I wondered at the vision (mareh), but none understood it.
Gabriel shows up now in 539-538 B.C., 11-12 years later to give Daniel further understanding about the "mareh"
Daniel 8 seems to have two visions. The Chazon and the Mareh.
The Chazon was the first vision (Dan 8:1-14) 2300 days/years
The Mareh was the second vision given (Dan 8:15-16). The appearance of a man.
Dan 8:15-16
15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, that I sought to understand it; and, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of the Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.
The Mareh seemed to be given as an explanation to the "chazon" vision which Daniel doesn't understand (vs26).
Dan 8:26-27
26 And the vision of the evenings and mornings which hath been told is true: but shut thou up the vision; for it belongeth to many days to come. 27 And I, Daniel, fainted, and was sick certain days; then I rose up, and did the king's business: and I wondered at the vision, but none understood it.
Mareh in Daniel 9:23
At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.
Chazon - Dan 8:1-2,13,15,17,26 Dan 9:21,24
Daniel is then given a 70 week explanation of the appearance of the mighty man or mareh.
Daniel 9:24
24 Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.
Here is the mareh OR the appearance of the mighty man. 70 weeks are decreed upon Daniels people and Daniels holy city.
Daniel's people?
Daniel's holy city?
Why might Gabriel refer to them as Daniel's people city?
70 weeks are decreed (or determined)
Weeks (H7620)
-seven, period of seven (days or years), heptad, week
70 weeks = 7days x 70 weeks = 490 days
In Daniel's prophecy, the "day for a year principle" = 1 day represents 1 year. This is accepted by scholars, and not something I just made up.
So the 490 days = 490 years
***490 are years are decreed upon the Jews in Babylon AND Jerusalem.
Why?
To finish transgression
To finish rebellion
Make an end of sin
To be finished with sin
Make reconciliation for iniquity
To cover over guilt/sin
Bring in everlasting righteousness
Bring in everlasting justice/righteousness
Seal up the vision (chazon) and prophecy
Affix a seal on the vision (chazon) and prophets
**Note: God's pattern is to repeat things. Could God be saying "Once the Mareh is established, the Chazon will also be established"?
Annointing the most holy
Annoint the most Holy/Jesus
Who do these 6 items seem to point to?
-Jesus
-Mareh
-appearance of the mighty man (Dan 8:15-16)
***Does your Bible say Most Holy place?, If so, read Heb 9:2-7,11-12
***When was the Most Holy (Jesus) annointed?**
Luk 3:21-23
21 Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am well pleased. 23 And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
So Jesus was about 30 years old when He was annointed with the Spirit and began to teach!
As to the date of Messiah’s anointing, Luke 3:1-2 provides many chronological clues:
Luk 3:1-2
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judæa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituræa and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Tiberius Caesar became ruler btw 11-14 A.D. So fifteen years into his rein would be btw 26-29 A.D.
So Jesus (who was 30 when he was annointed) was born btw 5-2 B.C. (remember that there is no year “0" so only one year transpires between 1 B. C. and 1 A. D.).
Dan 9:25
25 Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troublous times.
Summary
The countdown of the 70 weeks (or 490 years) begins with the commandment to restore and rebuilt Jerusalem.
When did this occur?
Either in 457-458 B.C during the 7th year of Persian king, Artaxerxes's rein
Ezr 7:11-13
11 Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of the commandments of Jehovah, and of his statutes to Israel: 12 Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect and so forth. 13 I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and their priests and the Levites, in my realm, that are minded of their own free will to go to Jerusalem, go with thee.
Or possibly in 444 B.C. during the 20th year of Persian king Artaxerxes' rein. Nehemiah 2?
Restore and rebuild Jerusalem?
It will be noticed that Daniel 9:25 requires a decree to both restore and build Jerusalem. Nothing short of this can fulfill the specifications of the prophecy.
But before we scrutinize the decree as such, it would be well to underline that Artaxerxes’ decree was given in the year 457 B. C. This date can be derived from Ezra 7:7-8 where we are told that the decree was given in the fall of the seventh year of Artaxerxes. The year 457
B. C., as the seventh year of king Artaxerxes, is one of the most firmly rooted dates in ancient history. The work of Siegfried Horn and Kenneth Wood, The Chronology of Ezra 7, is definitive in settling the reliability of this date.
The decree of Artaxerxes gave Ezra the right to reestablish the theocratic governance of Israel by appointing magistrates and judges to judge the people according to the law of God (Ezra 7:25). It also gave the judges and magistrates the right to punish violations of the law of God even to the point of imposing the death
Dan 9:25b
"from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks"
So from 457 B.C. unto the annointed one shall be 7 and 62 weeks (years) or 69 sevens.
***69 weeks (years) x 7 = 483 weeks (years)
457 B.C. + 483 years = 27 A.D.
What might have occurred in 27 A.D.?
How many weeks are remaining? How many are uncounted for? One
--------
Dan 9:25c
"it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troublous times."
What shall be built again? The city?
What type of city does the Messiah build? Natural or Spiritual?
Why does it mention "street" and "wall (or moat)"?
Both words are used in these 3 verses.
Deu 13:16
And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, unto Jehovah thy God: and it shall be a heap for ever; it shall not be built again.
Eze 16:24
that thou hast built unto thee a vaulted place, and hast made thee a lofty place in every street.
Eze 16:31
in that thou buildest thy vaulted place at the head of every way, and makest thy lofty place in every street, and hast not been as a harlot, in that thou scornest hire.
Dan 9:25d
"built again even in troublous times"
Troublous times for who?
God's natural people who without realizing it, reject their Messiah
Dan 9:26
26 And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined.
Summary
After 62 years? What does this mean?
Remember: 7-62-1
The annointed is cut off after 62 week period. Who is this?
Look at "Mareh.jpg"
Jump forward to Dan 9:27, it may help explain rest of v26
Dan 9:27
27 And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one that maketh desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.
Summary
He makes a covenant for 1 week. Who?
Jesus
Why 1 week?
That's all that remains in the 70 week (year) timeline.
Why does the sacrifice and oblation (drink offering) cease in the midst of the week?
Jesus' death halfway thru the 70th week (last week). The sacrifice in the temple in Jerusalem is now worthless. Jesus sacrifice is the only one that counts now!
"Upon the wing of abominations shall come one that maketh desolate".
Amongst many detestable things, one abomination makes completely barren.
Jesus' crucification
Wrath shall be poured out upon the desolate to make a full end.
God destroys the temple completely in 70 A.D. by Rome via Titus.
Now back to Dan 9:26..
Dan 9:26
And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined.
Summary con't
"and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary"
Rome(Gentiles)/Jerusalem/Natural temple
And
Christians(Gentiles)/Spiritual Jerusalem/Spiritual Temple
End shall be with flood, wars and desolations.
May be talking about only natural Jews but could be referring to spiritual Jews also.
Commentary
The prophecy of the 70 weeks specifies that Messiah was to come “seven weeks and threescore and two weeks” after the decree of Artaxerxes. Beginning in 457 B. C. and going forward 483 years we arrive at 27 A. D. as the date for the manifestation of the Messiah
We know that Christ was cut off or killed in the middle of the last week, at springtime (Passover). This must mean that Messiah was manifested to Israel three and a half years earlier, in the fall (incidentally, this also means that Artaxerxes’ decree was given in the fall).
Last 3 ½ years after Jesus death
The one week--seven years--ended in A. D. 34. Then by the stoning of Stephen the Jews finally sealed their rejection of the gospel; the disciples who were scattered abroad by persecution ‘went everywhere preaching the word’ (Acts 8:4); and shortly after, Saul the persecutor was converted, and became Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles.
