Daniel 9 - Part 1

 Review Daniel 8

  1. Daniel sees a vision in 551BC in Belshazzar's 3rd year. Vision = Hebrew word "khaw-zone". Word used once in vs1, twice in vs2.

  2. Read vs 1-2

  3. Ram w 2 horns pushes W, S and N.

  4. Ram represents Medes/Persians.

  5. He-goat w one horn appears and smashes into ram, casting him to ground and trampling him.

  6. He-goat represents Greece.

  7. The one horn is Greece's leader, Alexander the great who defeats Medes & Persians.

  8. The he-goat's horn was broken off while he was strong. Alexander the great died young.

  9. 4 horns came up in it's place. Four generals of Greece divided up the kingdom.

  10. Read vs9 - out of "one of them"?

  11. From one of the 4 horns (or one of the four winds) came up a little horn that became great towards the S, E & Glorious land.

  12. From one of the 4 divided Grecian kingdoms, a leader arises becoming great towards S, E & Israel.

  13. This was thought to be Antiochus Epiphanies from Gen Seleucus' kingdom when went into Jerusalem and desecrated the temple

  14. Then Daniel hears two holy ones speaking who say that 2300 days must pass till the sanctuary is cleansed. Vision (Hebrew word "khaw-zone") is 2300 days and then the sanctuary will be cleansed.

  15. Daniel sees a "second vision"

  16. Read vs 15. "when I had seen the vision (chazon)" he was shown a man

  17. Read vs 16 "between the banks of the Ulai"? Huh?

  18. Gabriel - Dan 8,9 Luke 1:19, 26

  19. Here is the second vision. Make this make this man understand the "mareh"? What about the Chazon?

  20. "Mareh" is mentioned in vs 15 too.

  1. Chazon - Dan 8:1-2,13,15,17,26 Dan 9:21,24

  2. Mareh - Dan 8:15-16, 26-27; Dan 9:23

  3. Read

Note:

God shows Daniel the vision of the restored Jerusalem Temple then the desecration and restore temple in  heaven followed by the desecration of that followed by the restoration of that.

Dan 9:1-2

1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans, 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years whereof the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the accomplishing of the desolations of Jerusalem, even seventy years.

***Show 'Timeline of Daniel'

Summary

  1. Daniel reads in the book of Jeremiah that 70 years fulfills/finishes Gods desolation of Jerusalem.

Jeremiah ministry was from 627-586BC-ish.

***Show 'Daniel & Jeremiah Timeline"

Daniel is not reading the Bible. He is reading the writings of Jeremiah, a contemporary prophet of the day that had died 30-35 years prior. And had prob written it 65-70 year years before.

The Babylonians captivity was btw 605-535BC-ish.

Jeremiah 25

Vs8-9

8 Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Because ye have not heard my words, 9 behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith Jehovah, and I will send unto Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.

Jer 25

Vs12-13

12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith Jehovah, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate for ever. 13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.

Jer 29:10

For thus saith Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

Dan 9:3-6

3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 4 And I prayed unto Jehovah my God, and made confession, and said, Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keepeth covenant and lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even turning aside from thy precepts and from thine ordinances; 6 neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, that spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

Summary

  1. Vs 3 Daniel seeks God by prayer and supplication with fasting and sackcloth

Why?

What are 'supplications'?

Supplication is a form of prayer in which someone makes a humble petition or an entreaty God.

  1. Remember Daniel 6, Daniel and the lions den?

-Lions den incident also occurred right after Medes & Persians took over, just like this!

-Remember, Daniel got caught praying, before being thrown in the lions den! prob one of the things he'd be praying about is God restoring Israel back to their land.

-remember in Ps 82, God was angry with the 'gods' he put over the heathen nations. Is this an example? Wanting to hinder Daniel from praying for the restoration of Israel?

  1. Vs 4 Daniel prays and seems to remind God that He "keeps covenant" with those that love and keep his commandments.

Why?

He is trying his best to seek and hear from God on behalf of his people, Israel

  1. Vs 5 But we don't keep your convenant nor "love" you via our obedience. We have sinned, done wickedly, rebelled turned aside from your rules and commands.

Who is Daniel prefiguring here?

Daniel is acting like a type of Christ who intercedes on behalf of his wayward people. His undeserving people.

  1. Vs 6 nor have we listened to the prophets, who spoke to our kings, princes, others and people.

Who are these?

Kings? Ahaz, Manasseh, Jehoiakim, etc

Princes? Prob Nobles

Father's? Ancestors and local leaders, family

People of land? Everyone else

Daniel 9:7-10

7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee. 8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; for we have rebelled against him; 10 neither have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

Vs 7-8 Confusion of face?

Confusion - shame (by an idol)

Face - face

Daniel 9:11-13

11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even turning aside, that they should not obey thy voice: therefore hath the curse been poured out upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God; for we have sinned against him. 12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil; for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet have we not entreated the favor of Jehovah our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in thy truth.

Summary

  1. V11 We are guilty and you poured your wrath out on us (and we sinned against Moses)

  1. V12 This great evil (which God brought) hasnt been done under the whole heaven as it has been done to Jerusalem

  1. Vs 13. Even tho this evil has happened to us, we haven't become grieved before God to turn from our sins and understand truth.

Wow this is a big deal! Daniel is saying that after 70+ years, they didn't change. And are undeserving of anything!

Jer 29:11-13

11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end. 12 And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Was Daniel the only one searching with his whole heart???

You would think they would have changed and they didn't!!!

Daniel 9:14-16

14 Therefore hath Jehovah watched over the evil, and brought it upon us; for Jehovah our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth, and we have not obeyed his voice. 15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. 16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, let thine anger and thy wrath, I pray thee, be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are round about us.

Summary

  1. Vs 13. God "watched over" or "overseen" the evil which is upon us. And we still haven't obeyed!!

  1. Vs 15. God, you showed power and strength when you brought you people out of Egypt, and still have this authority today. But we have sinned and done wickedly.

Daniel seems to interercede for a people that are completely undeserving of Gods mercy!!???

  1. Vs 16 Despite, our failings, show mercy, turn from your anger and wrath. We are guilty and our sins have made us a disgrace to those around us.

Daniel 9:17-19

17 Now therefore, O our God, hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. 18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies' sake. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God, because thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

Summary

  1. Vs 17 - Listen to my prayers. Shine upon your desolate sanctuary for Your sake.

(Implied: Not based on our efforts, or lack of our efforts)

  1. Vs 18 Please listen, God. See our desolations, show great mercy on us, for we aren't righteous.

  1. Vs 19. Hear us and forgive us. Don't delay. Your city and people are called by your name.

Harken (v17), hear (v18), hear (v19)

Daniel 9:20-23

20 And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he instructed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.

Summary

  1. Vs 20 While Daniel is praying and confessing his sins and the sins of his people…

  1. Gabriel, whom he seen in Dan 8:16 came flying and touched Daniel about the time of the evening sacrifice

***Gabriel also spoke w Zacharias (John the Baptist father) and Mary in NT

  1. Vs23 When you (Daniel) first began praying, the word had come forth (from God) and I have come to tell you.

  1. You are greatly loved (precious) to God.

Look at vs Dan 9:4

***vs 4 "God keeps his covenant...with them that love Him…."

  1. Therefore I (Gabriel) and come forth to give you wisdom and understanding

Wisdom/Understanding of what???

###start here

Daniel 9:24-

24 Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. 25 Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troublous times. 26 And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one that maketh desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.
