Daniel 3 - "The Furnace"

 Dan 3:1-3

1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3 Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Oh my gosh!! After having Daniel interpret his dream, he turns around and creates his own image!!!

  1. Entire image is gold, why stop at the head??

  2. Height is 60 cubits. Cubits = 1.5 ft. So 90ft high

  3. Width is 6 cubits. Cubits = 1.5. So 9 ft wide

  4. What is 6 the number of? Man

Per EW Bullinger regarding the number '6':

"it has to do with man; it is the number of imperfection; the human number; the number of MAN as destitute of God, without God, without Christ."

Sep·tu·a·gint

a Greek version of the Hebrew Bible (or Old Testament), including the Apocrypha, made for Greek-speaking Jews in Egypt in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and adopted by the early Christian Churches.

Says that this occured in Nebuchadnezzar's 18th year. Eighteen is '6' x 3.

I'll try and put the link in the video:

http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/number01.htm

  1. All his leaders are invited/come and stand before the image

**Can anyone describe what this represents?

**Man (6's) building 'his own' kingdom of God on earth, that he believes he has been given or entrusted with via the dream in chapter two.

Dan 3:4-7

4 Then the herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up; 6 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 7 Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

  1. Why does the herald say (vs 4) "To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages" if it's only the leaders of his kingdom?

(satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces)

  1. The herald says whenever you hear these instruments/music, you fall down and worship the image that the kings set up.

  1. Whoever doesn't is thrown into a fiery furnace in the same hour…

  1. In verse 7, why does it say "Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up"

When did it change from "O peoples, nations, languages" to "all the peoples, nations and the languages"???

  1. Has he been deceived? Has he grossly misinterpreted or misunderstood the meaning of the dream? How?

  1. Thinks he has to build a physical image, even tho the dream was symbolic

  2. Makes the entire statue gold, even tho it was just the head

  3. Dream represents something that happens in a great period of time, in 'latter days'

  4. People weren't forced into obedience in dream, at risk of death.

  1. Where did the music come from? Unsure

  1. Where did the forced worship come from? The 'image' in Daniel 2 ruled over the earth but not with forced worship and risk of death. Although the "Iron" did subdue AND break in pieces all things.

  1. Where did a fiery furnace come from?

Dan 3:8-12

8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews. 9 They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar the king, O king, live for ever. 10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image; 11 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

1.Why 'might' the Chaldeans want to strike back at the Jews, or Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego (possibly even Daniel, altho he isn't mentioned)?

-prob because what occured in last chapter. The Chaldeans said to the king "There is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter," AND "there is no other that can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh."

2. Why the music?

-to allure carnal sensual persons

Dan 3:13-15

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them, Is it of purpose, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that ye serve not my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands?

  1. In rage and fury he "commands" them to brings three men to him

- violent anger. At the Chaldeans or at Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego?

  1. Remember, these three were promoted in the last verse of chapter two. But only over the affairs of the province of Babylon, not the entire kingdom, like Daniel, which seems to include Judah, prob Syria, eventually Egypt. May have worked under Daniel.

  1. Nebuchadnezzar asks 'did you not serve/worship my god intentionally? I'll give you one more chance…

  1. When you hear the music, fall down and worship. If not, you'll be thrown into the fiery furnace the same hour.

  1. Why does Nebuchadnezzar say "who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands?"

-does he think that the kingdom has been turned over to him? MAYBE?

-because Nebuchadnezzar was told by Daniel:

"Dan 2:37 ASV Thou, O king, art king of kings, unto whom the God of heaven hath given the kingdom, the power, and the strength, and the glory"

Dan 3:16-18

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer thee in this matter. 17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thy hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

  1. Notice that they don't begin their words to the king with "O king, live for ever" like Dan 2:4 and Dan 3:9. They say "we have no need to answer thee".

  1. Their reaction to Nebuchadnezzar says that their God is not his god, nor is the statue.

  1. Their God is able to deliver and may deliver. But if not, they still won't worship his gods nor his golden image.

  1. Doesn't Nebuchadnezzar remember that Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-nego, and DANIEL worship the same God

Nebuchadnezzar said in:

Dan 2:47b...Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets…

**Altho he seemed to believe at the time that their God was the God of (many) gods***

Dan 3:19-21

19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was wont to be heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their hosen, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

  1. THEN Nebuchadnezzar is full of fury? I thought he was in "rage and fury" in vs 13? Is this different?

  1. And the "form of his visage was changed"?

-form (image, idol, idolatrous image) of his visage (face, nose) was changed (altered)

-was he hiding his real face?

  1. 7x's hotter? What might this be?

-tribulation period?

Per EW Bullinger regarding the number '7':

"We have just seen that six … as being emphatically the number of man. We come now to the great number of spiritual perfection (7). A number which, therefore, occupies so large a place in the works, and especially in the Word of God as being inspired by the Holy Spirit."

  1. Bound (tied up) in their coats, leggings, caps, other garments?

  1. Certain mighty men of Babylon cast them into midst of fiery furnace.

Parable?

**What does Babylon represent?

-Fleshly Christianity; earth dwellers, carnal

Gal 4:29

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, so also it is now.

Joh 6:63

It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life.

***Remember:

Babylon thinks their God is the same as Daniel, Shadrach, Mishach and Adebnago. It's not.

Who does Daniel, Shadrach, Mishach and Adebnago represent?

-spirit man; those that dwell in heaven

The Two Men in the earth

  1. Fleshly, carnal, earth dwellers

  2. Spiritual man, dwell in heavenly places

???Example???

1Co 2:12-14

12 But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; combining spiritual things with spiritual words. 14 Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged.

Babylon seeks to appeal to the flesh or sensual as evidenced in this example as evidenced by music in this parable.

Jud 1:17-20

17 But ye, beloved, remember ye the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 that they said to you, In the last time there shall be mockers, walking after their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are they who make separations, sensual, having not the Spirit. 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

Does this match Nebuchadnezzar?

  1. In the last time or (latter days)?

  2. Mocker?

  3. Walking after his own ungodly lusts?

  4. Sensual?

Who is Jude referring too?

Jud 1:12

These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

***So at some point in the latter days, it seems as if fleshly Babylon intensely (7x's) persecutes the Spirit man.

Daniel 3:22-25

22 Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste: he spake and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the aspect of the fourth is like a son of the gods.

  1. Flames slew those that "ascended" up with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.

-ascended up? Certainly another 'ten day' period

-seems the way 'up' is through the fire.

  1. They are thrown in and "fell down bound" in the midst of the furnace.

  1. What are they bound with?

-certain mighty men from army bind them (vs 20)

-also bound with coats, leggings, caps, other garments (vs 21)

  1. King was astonished.

  1. Notices four people, not three

  2. They are now walking in midst and have no hurt

-Had to have fetters burned off

-then be able to stand

  1. 4th man is in the fire like a Son of God or gods

-Jesus? (Why a son of God/s and not angel?)

**Spiritual principle: No spiritual increase without the fire or "ten days".

Dan 3:26-30

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace: he spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth out of the midst of the fire. 27 And the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power upon their bodies, nor was the hair of their head singed, neither were their hosen changed, nor had the smell of fire passed on them. 28 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. 29 Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god that is able to deliver after this sort. 30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon.

  1. Nebuchadnezzar tells them to come out

  2. Many of the king's men witnessed this. Upon release:

  1. the fire had no power upon their bodies,

  2. the hair of their head wasnt even singed

  3. neither were their coats/cloaks changed

  4. no smell of fire passed on them

  1. Nebuchadnezzar said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  1. who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him

  2. set aside the king’s command

  3. yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God

  1. Nebuchadnezzar decrees:

  1. that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces,

  2. and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god that is able to deliver after this sort.

  1. Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego

***Any changes in Nebuchadnezzar?

  1. Their God is full of strength

  2. Sent an angel or Jesus

  3. Delivers those who trust in Him

  4. Their God (or Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego) set aside the king's word

  5. Decrees that if you speak amiss towards their God, you will be cut in pieces

  6. Says know "other god" delivers after this sort.

Great change?

########

Does God speak thru unholy people in some form or fashion?

Yes

Examples:

  1. Nebuchadnezzar

  2. Joh 11:49-51  49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50 nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 51 Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;

  3. Joh 7:35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go that we shall not find him? will he go unto the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

Act 16:16 And it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.17 The same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.
