Another Third Day Study

 Another Third Day study

Rev 11:8

And their dead bodies lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

Gen 38:28-30

28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. 29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself? therefore his name was called Perez. 30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah.

What do we remember?

Zerah - arm came out, scarlet thread on wrist, arm pulled back in, last full born baby

Perez - first full baby born

Significance?

***Put up map of Paul's journey to Rome***

Act 27:1-4

1 And when it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band. 2 And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail unto the places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us. 3 And the next day we touched at Sidon: and Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go unto his friends and refresh himself. 4 And putting to sea from thence, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

Cyprus - love:a blossom

-a very fertile and delightful island of the Mediterranean, lying between Cilicia and Syria

Acts 27:5

5 And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia

  1. Cilicia - "the land of Celix"

-a maritime province in the southeast of Asia Minor,Its capital, Tarsus, was the birth place of Paul

-Paul visited it soon after his conversion (Galatians 1:21; Acts 9:30), and again, on his second missionary journey (15:41), "he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches."

  1. Pamphylia - "a nation of every tribe"

-a province in Asia Minor, bounded on the east by Cilicia, on the west by Lycia and Phrygia Minor, on the north by Galatia and Cappadocia, and on the south by the Mediterranean Sea

Rev 5:9

And they sing a new song, saying,  Worthy art thou to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and didst purchase unto God with thy blood men of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation,

  1. Myra - myrrh

-Myrrh used for embalming and perfume, purification

What do we know about myrhh?

Myrrh

Pro 7:17

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

Son 5:1

I am come into my garden, my sister, my bride:  I have gathered my myrrh with my spice;  I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey;  I have drunk my wine with my milk.  Eat, O friends;  Drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.

Mat 2:11

And they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary his mother; and they fell down and worshipped him; and opening their treasures they offered unto him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Joh 19:39-40

39 And there came also Nicodemus, he who at the first came to him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

***Up to this point, which children might be referenced?

Perez or Zerah

  1. Lycia - wolfish

Act 20:29

29 I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock;

Acts 27:6

6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy; and he put us therein.

Found a ship of Alexandria..,.Egypt

-Switched ships!

Rev 11:8

And their dead bodies lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

***An Egyptian ship...a Ship of Babylon!***

Acts 27:7

7 And when we had sailed slowly many days, and were come with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not further suffering us, we sailed under the lee of Crete, over against Salmone;

  1. The "wind" did not allow us to go further?

  1. Crete - "fleshy"

  1. "Exactly what we might expect to happen to the Babylonian church. Full of flesh...

  1. . -Salmone  "clothed"?

****Which child might be referenced now?****

Acts 27:8-10

8 and with difficulty coasting along it we came unto a certain place called Fair Havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. 9 And when much time was spent, and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast was now already gone by, Paul admonished them, 10 and said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the lading and the ship, but also of our lives.

The fast was past:  Lev 16:29; 23:27

"Day of Atonement"

Late Sept, early Oct when sailing in Mediterranean was dangerous

The "voyage" of Perez - the fleshly clothed Christian ship

Acts 27:11

11 But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship, than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

What words were spoke by Paul?

Rom 8:5-8

5 For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace: 7 because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be: 8 and they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

The flesh Church/Perez can not please God. This fleshly church is Babylon. The fleshly church should not have continued to sail around Crete (flesh).

Paul's words aren't heeded.

Remember:

Rom 8:13

for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Acts 27:12

12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to put to sea from thence, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter there; which is a haven of Crete, looking north-east and south-east.

-the majority thought they could reach Phoenix by continuing onward around "fleshly" Crete.

Phoenix - G540 - palm tree

Psa 92:12

The righteous shall flourish like the palm-tree:  He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

Joe 1:12

The vine is withered, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm-tree also, and the apple-tree, even all the trees of the field are withered: for joy is withered away from the sons of men.

Acts 27:13

13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close in shore.

Job 37:17

How thy garments are warm (or hot),  When the earth is still by reason of the south wind?

Luk 12:55-56

55 And when ye see a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat; and it cometh to pass. 56 Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time?

Job 37:9

Out of the chamber of the south cometh the storm (tempest/hurricane),  And cold out of the north.

Acts 27:14

14 But after no long time there beat down from it (the south wind) a tempestuous wind, which is called Euraquilo

***Remember, Rom 8:13

for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Let's look at two words here….

  1. Tempestuous

G5189 - like a whirlwind

-variation of G5188 - to cause or emit smoke, raise a smoke, to smoke, "slowly consume without flame"

Used in this verse:

Mat 12:20

A bruised reed shall he not break,  And smoking flax shall he not quench,  Till he send forth judgment unto victory.

-what is the smoking flax that shall not be quenched till he sends forth judgement unto victory?

Church or fleshly Perez

Back to the verse...

-the judgement sent against Perez, the fleshy/fleshly church

What wind blew against the Egyptian ship?

  1. Euroquilo or Euroclydon - G2148

(northeaster)

-made up of two Greek words:

  1. Euros (the east wind)

  2. G2830; a storm from the east (or south east),

G2830 - a dashing or surging wave, a surge, a violent agitation of the sea

Jas 1:6

But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.

So the half the word describes a person without faith who doubts, they are like a "surging wave".

Euros - east wind

-Like the "south wind", the "east wind" is symbolic. Remember God brings it against his NT fleshly people, which we can call Perez.

Gen 41:5-7

5 And he (Pharaoh) (note: of Egypt) slept and dreamed a second time: and, behold, seven ears of grain came up upon one stalk, rank and good. 6 And, behold, seven ears, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. 7 And the thin ears swallowed up the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

-7 ears of fat, good grain

-followed by 7 ears of thin, scorched grain blasted by the east wind

-think, scorched grain swallows fat good grain

****What does this represent?

Another OT example of the east wind

Exo 10:13-15

13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and Jehovah brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all the night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the borders of Egypt; very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing, either tree or herb of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

  1. same story as previous

  2. locust are brought in with the east wind

  3. who brought in the east wind?

  4. why does it say this in verse 15 "For they covered the face of the whole earth"?

  5. what do they eat?

they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing, either tree or herb of the field,

  1. What do the locust represent?

-fleshly false teachers that ruins the God's crop

Search for the phrase "east wind" in the bible and you will be shocked at what you read. Practically every single time describes the shriveling/drying up of God's people.

"...there remained not any green thing" Ex 10:15

Luk 23:31

For if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

***They crucified Jesus. He was being led to the cross as he spoke this.

**Putting both pieces of the storm together we have this:

  1. A person who prays but doesn't have faith and doubts (storm, surge, wave)

  2. The shriveling up of God's people people (Euro - east wind)

Acts 27:15

15 and when the ship was caught, and could not face the wind, we gave way to it, and were driven.

The ship couldn't handle the wind, sailors unable to handle it and they let her drift.

Acts 27:16

16 And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat:

Cauda (or Claudia) -means "lame"

Secure the boat? - secure the lifeboat most likely that had been floating behind them? To keep it from being destroyed?

Acts 27:17

17 and when they had hoisted it up, they used helps, under-girding the ship; and, fearing lest they should be cast upon the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and so were driven.

Syrtis - quicksand, shoals, run aground

Acts 27:18

18 And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw the freight overboard;

As the God created storm continued, they began to throw their cargo overboard.

-Wonder what this represents?

Acts 27:19

19 and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship.

Giant metaphor: the third day

**So we are probably here right now in 2020.

Tackling - G4631 - any apparatus, equipment, or furniture

From G4632 - a vessel, implement, equipment or apparatus (literally or figuratively [specifically a wife as contributing to the usefulness of the husband]): - goods, sail, stuff, vessel

Rom 9:21-23

21 Or hath not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor? 22 What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction: 23 and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he afore prepared unto glory,

Another example:

2Ti 2:21

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master's use, prepared unto every good work.

***What if a man doesn't purge himself?

2Ti 2:20

Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some unto honor, and some unto dishonor.

What might it mean to "cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship"?

2Ti 2:21;26

21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master's use, prepared unto every good work. 25 in meekness correcting them that oppose themselves; if peradventure God may give them repentance unto the knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him unto his will.

Acts 27:20

20 And when neither sun nor stars shone upon us for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was now taken away.

  1. Sun nor stars shone on us

  • Sun and stars didn't shine on them.

  • The ship represents the moon

  1. all hope of being saved is gone

Acts 27:21

21 And when they had been long without food, then Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss.

What type of food is Paul referring to here?

-spiritual food

Did Paul set sail aboard the spiritual church?

-yes

Did Paul warn the spiritual church (ship) to rid themselves of their fleshly nature?

-yes. Paul had a large hand in establishing and maintaining the true spiritual church via the last 2000 years.

Acts 27:22

22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer; for there shall be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

  1. I believe this promise is for those who have sailed on the spiritual ship that Paul speaks of. Those that have rid themselves of their fleshly nature. Not everyone.

  1. Notice the ship will be lost.

Acts 27:23-27

23 For there stood by me this night an angel of the God whose I am, whom also I serve, 24 saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Cæsar: and lo, God hath granted thee all them that sail with thee. 25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even so as it hath been spoken unto me. 26 But we must be cast upon a certain island. 27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven to and fro in the sea of Adria, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some country:

Driven to and fro - shakings

Heb 12:27

And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.

(Sea of) Adria - (sea) without wood

2Ti 2:20

Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some unto honor, and some unto dishonor.

Jas 3:4-5

4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. 5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!

Again...

Acts 27:27

"...about midnight, the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some country"

Probably "Zerah" country or kingdom

Heb 12:28

Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:

Mat 25:6

But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him.

Acts 27:28

28 and they sounded, and found twenty fathoms; and after a little space, they sounded again, and found fifteen fathoms. 29 And fearing lest haply we should be cast ashore on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for the day.

They wished for the spiritual day because they were in the midst of great spiritual darkness/nite.

Acts 27:30-32

30 And as the sailors were seeking to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, under color as though they would lay out anchors from the foreship, 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. 32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

  1. the seemed to want to save themselves via a lifeboat

  2. Paul seems to think that salvation only comes by not saving themselves and remaining in the ship

  3. any ability to save themselves was destroyed

Acts 27:33-39

33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take some food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing. 34 Wherefore I beseech you to take some food: for this is for your safety: for there shall not a hair perish from the head of any of you. 35 And when he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; and he brake it, and began to eat. 36 Then were they all of good cheer, and themselves also took food. 37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. 38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea. 39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they perceived a certain bay with a beach, and they took counsel whether they could drive the ship upon it.

***They didn't recognize the land. The Zerah land that in unfamiliar to the Perez church.

Acts 27:40-41

40 And casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosing the bands of the rudders; and hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. 41 But lighting upon a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground; and the foreship struck and remained unmoveable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.

***The fleshly church/Babylon etc is destroyed.

Acts 27:42-44

42 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape. 43 But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stayed them from their purpose; and commanded that they who could swim should cast themselves overboard, and get first to the land; 44 and the rest, some on planks, and some on other things from the ship. And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safe to the land.

Similar examples:

Luk 9:38-43

38 And behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee to look upon my son; for he is mine only child: 39 and behold, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him sorely. 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast it out; and they could not. 41 And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring hither thy son.  42 And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marvelling at all the things which he did, he said unto his disciples,

Mar 9:14-29

14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great multitude about them, and scribes questioning with them. 15 And straightway all the multitude, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. 16 And he asked them, What question ye with them? 17 And one of the multitude answered him, Teacher, I brought unto thee my son, who hath a dumb spirit; 18 and wheresoever it taketh him, it dasheth him down: and he foameth, and grindeth his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast it out; and they were not able. 19 And he answereth them and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him unto me. 20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him grievously; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21 And he asked his father, How long time is it since this hath come unto him? And he said, From a child. 22 And oft-times it hath cast him both into the fire and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us, and help us. 23 And Jesus said unto him, If thou canst! All things are possible to him that believeth.  24 Straightway the father of the child cried out, and said, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25 And when Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26 And having cried out, and torn him much, he came out: and the boy became as one dead; insomuch that the more part said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose. 28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, How is it that we could not cast it out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come out by nothing, save by prayer.

Act 16:13-14 ASV 13 And on the sabbath day we went forth without the gate by a river side, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were come together. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.
