Double portion of Lazarus

 Double portion

Bible study 71

Meaning of "Double Portion":

It's not simply about twice as much, but about inheriting the anointing and authority of the firstborn son, signifying a special blessing and God's favor.

Examples in the Bible:

Elisha: His request for a double portion was fulfilled, as he inherited Elijah's prophetic mantle and performed miracles.

Job: God restored Job's fortunes, giving him twice as much as he had before his trials, which could be seen as a "double portion".

Hannah: Elkanah, Hannah's husband, gave her a double portion of the sacrifice, recognizing her as a beloved wife, even though she was barren.

Joseph: Joseph was given a double portion of inheritance from his father Jacob, due to his birthright as the firstborn.

In NT: Overcomers:

The idea of receiving a double portion can be seen as a promise of abundant blessings for those who overcome challenges and remain faithful to God.

Isa 61:1-2a

1 The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2a to proclaim the year of Jehovah's favor,

Jesus says this in Luke 4:18-19

Is 61:2b-7

2b and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3 to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified. 4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. 5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners shall be your plowmen and your vine-dressers. 6 But ye shall be named the priests of Jehovah; men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. 7 Instead of your shame ye shall have double; and instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be unto them.

Double portion (on the 3rd/7th day)

  1. Build up the old wastes

  2. Raise up the former desolations

  3. This includes the desolations of many generations

  4. Priests of the Lord

  5. Ministers of God

  6. Eat the wealth of Nations

  7. They shall rejoice in their portion

Isa 61:8

8 For I, Jehovah, love justice, I hate robbery with iniquity; and I will give them their recompense in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

Robbery?

Joh 10:1

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

Joh 10:10

The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

Is 61:9-11

9 And their seed shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which Jehovah hath blessed. 10 I will greatly rejoice in Jehovah, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with a garland, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth bringeth forth its bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord Jehovah will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

On day 3rd/7th, God brings the double portion that causes the earth to bring forth its bud….in front of ALL nations.

One promise given to Overcomers was:

Rev 2:26-27

26 And he that overcometh, and he that keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give authority over the nations: 27 and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to shivers; as I also have received of my Father:

Double portion

John 11:1-4

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. 4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.

Jesus is using Lazarus as a parable for the eventual state of the church - Him whom Jesus loves will become sick (the church)

The son of God is glorified in and thru the church

John 11:5-6

5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.

Jesus loves Mary, Martha and Lazarus but remains where he is for two days

Think of it this way: Jesus establishes the church in the very early part of day one and then leaves for the rest of day one and remains away on day two.

John 11:7-10

7 Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.  8 The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? 9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.  10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

12 hours?

  1. 12 daylight hours in which the light of the world shines

  2. 12 night hours of darkness with no light

Why does Jesus mention 12 hours of good and the 12 hours of bad?

As a metaphor for Lazarus sickness, The church started off in light but eventually delved into darkness, became sick and died.

John 11:11-14

11 These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.  12 The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover. 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Jesus speaks of the death of Lazarus (or the church) as sleeping although he has really died. Why?

I think it's because if you describes it as sleeping, He has the ability to waken it.

No faith on the earth?

John 11:15-17

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. 16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

Lazarus is dead and in grave 4 days. Could be 4+2 plus 1 more travel day = 7?

Or 2+1 travel day = 3rd day?

John 11:18-21

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off; 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house. 21 Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Jesus , if you had only left immediately, Lazarus would be alive.

Jesus, of you hadn't left your poor, helpless church alone for 2000+ years, it wouldn't have fallen asleep or died.

Maybe it was his intention to stay away that long because it was part of his plan?

John 11:22-24

22 And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. 23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.  24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

This event typifies the restoration of the dead church on the 3rd or 7th day.

This solidifies the fact that this is also it is 7th/3rd day revelation.

John 11:25-33

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;  26 and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?  27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even he that cometh into the world. 28 And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here, and calleth thee. 29 And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him. 30 (Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.) 31 The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there. 32 Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

Jesus sees their weeping and becomes agitated. Possibly their lack of faith made him angry.

Anger ofJesus at the unbelief the same way that God is angry at the robbery of his people in Is 61.

John 11:34-38

34 and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept. 36 The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die? 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

Again their lack of faith makes Jesus angry.

John 11:39-45

39 Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been dead four days. 40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me. 43 And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. 45 Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

Lazarus is raised/awoken.

John 11:46-52

46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs. 48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. 49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50 nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 51 Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.

John 11:53-54

53 So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.

Ephraim - double fruitfulness or double portion; shall be doubly fruitful
