John 21 vs Ezekiel 47

 Joh 20:19-25

19 When therefore it was evening, on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had said this, he showed unto them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus therefore said to them again, Peace be unto you: as the Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit: 23 whose soever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven unto them; whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

  1. Vs25 Think about this:

    1. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

  1. The level of hard-heartedness by Thomas is almost absurd. It would appear that Jesus has appeared already to Mary Magdalene, the other Mary, Salome, Clopas, The other guy on the road to Emmaus, and the remaining 10 disciples at least, not counting the outer rim followers that may have been in the room that evening on the first day of the week. That is a lot of people.

  1. If it were my immediate family who told me they saw something or someone I would more than likely be swayed by their testimony because I know their character and I know them. And they all would have no reason to lie as a group.

  1. “We saw him standing here right in front of us right over there…with his scars on his hands, his feet and his side…”

  1. Sister-in-law story about seeing dead grandmother on the sofa.

John 20:26-27

26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and see my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and put it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

  1. Everything we discuss tonite is base on this: “be not faithless but be believing”

John 20:28-31

28 Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. 29 Jesus saith unto him, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 30 Many other signs therefore did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 but these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye may have life in his name.

  1. Here's another incident of somebody believing without necessarily seeing. And another person not seeing and not believing.

John 20:6-8

6 Simon Peter therefore also cometh, following him, and entered into the tomb; and he beholdeth the linen cloths lying, 7 and the napkin, that was upon his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then entered in therefore the other disciple also, who came first to the tomb, and he saw, and believed.

John saw and believed. Peter saw too. But it doesn't say that he believed. Although he may not have been as hard-hearted as Thomas was.

Joh 21:1-3

1 After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and he manifested himself on this wise. 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and entered into the boat; and that night they took nothing.

  1. Here we see seven disciples in what province of Israel? Galilee

  1. Remember that Jesus said he was going to meet them in Galilee and that they should go back there?

  1. Remember the types here we've seen of John and Peter.

  1. John is the disciple who believes without seeing. And what does John referred to himself as? The disciple whom Jesus loved…

  1. Peter is the disciple that sees but doesn't believe or doesn't get it.

  1. But Peter is also typed as something else. Any ideas?

Mat 16:15-19

15 He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

18 And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  1. Peter represents the church!

  1. “thou art Peter (G4074 Petros, noun masculine), and upon this rock (G4073 Petra noun feminine)  I will build my church (G1577 ecclesia noun feminine)

  1. Mat 16:18 CLV Now I, also, am saying to you that you are Peter, and on this rock will I be building My ecclesia, and the gates of the unseen shall not be prevailing against it.”

  1. What adjectives might we describe Peter has?

    1. Impulsive

    2. Leader

    3. seems to want to call the shots but doesn't really know what he's doing

    4. Betrayer

  1. Mat 16:23

But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art a stumbling-block unto me: for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men

  1. Irregardless, in verse 19, Jesus says “I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

  1. Now Jesus could have built his church on John, right?
“The disciple whom Jesus loved”…”The one who saw and believed”

  1. Back to John 21: 3, what does Simon Peter decide to do?

    1. “I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and entered into the boat; and that night they took nothing.”

John 21:4-7

4 But when day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach: yet the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus therefore saith unto them, Children, have ye aught to eat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7 That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his coat about him (for he was naked), and cast himself into the sea.

  1. Vs4 An unrecognizable Jesus stands on the beach at sunrise. Any thoughts? Hugely important.

  1. Isa 60:1-3

1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of Jehovah is risen upon thee. 2 For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but Jehovah will arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And nations shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

  1. Who recognized Jesus? John, the disciple whom Jesus loved.

  1. Will the church recognize the second coming of Christ? No, the Bible has Peter being a type of the church, and Peter doesn't recognize.

  1. Vs6 cast your net on the right side of the boat? Any thoughts?

  1. Eze 47:1-2

1 And he brought me back unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward; (for the forefront of the house was toward the east); and the waters came down from under, from the right side of the house, on the south of the altar. 2 Then he brought me out by the way of the gate northward, and led me round by the way without unto the outer gate, by the way of the gate that looketh toward the east; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.

  1. What is the significance of Peter being naked?

    1. Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art the wretched one and miserable and poor and blind and naked:

John 21:8-11

8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits off), dragging the net full of fishes. 9 So when they got out upon the land, they see a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now taken. 11 Simon Peter therefore went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, the net was not rent.

  1. The story is symbolic. At the second coming of Christ, Peter (the church) does not recognize Jesus. Seems that only John does. Peter jumps into water and swims to Jesus while the rest of the disciples pull in the harvest.

  1. The second coming is on which day? The third.

John 21:14

This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

  1. Peter (the church) only takes part in pulling the haul in from the beach.

  1. So what is 153 symbolic for?

  1. This entire story is told and Ezekiel 47. Let's read it all again. Think of it as a natural picture of the spiritual temple of Jesus and his second coming…

Understand?

Eze 47:3-7

3 When the man went forth eastward with the line in his hand, he measured a thousand cubits, and he caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the ankles. 4 Again he measured a thousand, and caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the loins. 5 Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass through; for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed through. 6 And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the bank of the river. 7 Now when I had returned, behold, upon the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other.

Understand?

Eze 47:8-10

8 Then said he unto me, These waters issue forth toward the eastern region, and shall go down into the Arabah; and they shall go toward the sea; into the sea shall the waters go which were made to issue forth; and the waters shall be healed. 9 And it shall come to pass, that every living creature which swarmeth, in every place whither the rivers come, shall live; and there shall be a very great multitude of fish; for these waters are come thither, and the waters of the sea shall be healed, and everything shall live whithersoever the river cometh. 10 And it shall come to pass, that fishers shall stand by it: from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim shall be a place for the spreading of nets; their fish shall be after their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.

Understand?

John 21:12-14

12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and break your fast. And none of the disciples durst inquire of him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus cometh, and taketh the bread, and giveth them, and the fish likewise. 14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
