Bible Study 104

Matt 18:12-14
Abrahamic covenant that God made with Abraham was based on faith….Ur to Canaan
99
Abram
Hagar
Ishmael
100
Abraham
Sarah
Isaac
Symbolically speaking, what is the difference between the 99 and the 100?
99 had assistance from Sarah via Hagar to create the offspring of Ishmael
100 was all done by God. God even waited until it was physically impossible to achieve. He waited till Sarah and Abraham were too old to conceive.
Plugging this info into Matthew 18:
Jesus states how important the 100th (or the one) sheep is.
Jesus leaves the 99 to go after the 100th or the one.
Jesus rejoices over the 100th or the one more than the 99.
It is not the will of the Father that one of these little ones should perish (I'm assuming he means of the 100th or the one)
What is faith?
Heb 11:1
Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen.
Was Abraham's Covenant with God a covenant of faith?
Heb 11:8
By FAITH Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
When did Abraham first show faith? When he left Ur of the Chaldeans (Babylon) to follow God's call.
Act 7:2-3
And he said, Men, brethren and fathers, hear: The God of the Glory appeared to our: father Abraham when in: Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, 3 and said unto him, Come out of thy: land, and thy: kindred, and come hither into the land which I shall show thee.
Gal 3:6-7
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness. 7 Know therefore that they that are of faith, the same are sons of Abraham.
Therefore:
God shows up and makes a covenant with Abraham based on faith. Faith
What is the covenant that God had with Moses in Exodus? Law
What is God's covenant with us thru Christ based on? Faith
So faith, law, then faith…remember this!
Remember circumcision?
Which of Abraham's sons was circumcised? Both Ishmael and Isaac
Which day?
For Isaac? the eighth day
For Ishmael, year 13
Gen 17:25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Regarding Abraham and circumcision…
Rom 4:9-13
9 Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say, To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness. 10 How then was it reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision: 11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned unto them;
When did Abraham receive the sign of circumcision while in uncircumcision?
Gen 15:5-6
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and number the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in Jehovah; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness.
So…was Ishmael born yet? No Ishmael was conceived until chapter 16.
Does anyone know what I am getting at?
God's covenant with Abraham was based on faith.
Remember the pattern:
Abraham: FAITH
Moses: LAW
Jesus: FAITH
Therefore we can assume unless it's spoken otherwise, that both Abraham's sons were both born in the time when Abraham was reckoned by God as having faith.
If this is true, then we can look at both sons of Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac and try and see if God has foreshadowed anything within the Abrahamic covenant of faith with Jesus's covenant of faith. Any ideas?
Hint: 99 vs 100
Gal 3:8-9
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all the nations be blessed. 9 So then they that are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.
Paul is making a the point by comparing the faith of Abraham with the faith that will appear onto the Gentiles by Jesus
We can look at Abraham and try and compare it to our faith that we have been given via Jesus.
I am not suggesting that Jesus comes through line of Ishmael. But I am suggesting that both children of Abraham can be looked at as a metaphor for the faith-based church age.
Gal 3:14-16
14 that upon the Gentiles might come the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men: Though it be but a man's covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto. 16 Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Read if necessary:
Before Ishmael…
Gen 13:15
for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
After Ishmael…
Gen 17:8
And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
Faith based convenants:
99 Ishmael
Who is the faith based Ishmael in the new covenant? The church
Meaning that there is an end date to the church age
The third day and the end of the church age
Act 27:18-22
18 And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw the freight overboard; 19 and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship. 20 And when neither sun nor stars shone upon us for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was now taken away. 21 And when they had been long without food, then Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss. 22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer; for there shall be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

Current state of the church - no spiritual food
Vs21 Still Day 3 "then Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss."
