1 Sam 3

 Hannah/Samuel review

  1. Hannah (means grace) is a metaphor for NT church who is given grace.

  1. Hannah (or grace) is a metaphor for the bride (or wife) of Jesus.

Eph 2:8-9

8 for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not of works, that no man should glory.

  1. She is the brokenhearted bride who is unable to reproduce.

But remember:

Isa 61:1-3

1 The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of Jehovah's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3 to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

  1. She is also a metaphor for broken heart sick people of God on day 7 (or day of vengence) who are in a state of deep sorrow and morning and they eventually have an offspring that's referred to in Revelation 12

The offspring (or children) will be trees of righteousness that are produced on day 7.

What does Samuel symbolize?

Samuel - means " his name is El" El means God or godlike

So Hannah, the expectant,  grieving and mournful, 7th day bride of Christ finally has her long awaited man-child son. Who is swept up to God's throne.

In the natural picture, Samuel is delivered to the temple in Shiloh and brought up by Eli.

1Sa 3:1-5

1 And the child Samuel ministered unto Jehovah before Eli. And the word of Jehovah was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision. 2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to wax dim, so that he could not see), 3 and the lamp of God was not yet gone out, and Samuel was laid down to sleep, in the temple of Jehovah, where the ark of God was; 4 that Jehovah called Samuel; and he said, Here am I. 5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

Summary

  1. Vs1 Samuel serves the Lord before Eli. Words from God were precious. Because there was rarely a vision from God.

  1. Vs2 Seems Eli was laying down for the night and overall was losing his vision. He was either blind or going blind. Wonder if this is also a statement about his spiritual life?

  1. Vs3 Three things happen:

  1. The lamp of God was not yet gone out?

  1. Candlestick in the Tabernacle was lit every evening and burned till morning

Exo 27:21

In the tent of meeting, without the veil which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall keep it in order from evening to morning before Jehovah: it shall be a statute for ever throughout their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel.

  1. Samuel was laid down for bed for the evening. But I'm thinking that he wasn't asleep yet.

  1. He sleeps in the temple of God where the ark of God was.

  1. Vs4 God calls Samuel. Samuel says "here I am".

  1. Vs5:

    1. Samuel gets up and runs to Eli saying "here I am, you called!"

Why might Samuel be so responsive to Eli?

Samuel knows that Eli is losing his vision and is probably used to responding to his various needs.

  1. Eli responds "I didn't call you, go back to bed and go to sleep"

  1. Samuel goes back to bed and lays down.

This is the first time.

1 Sam 3:6-10

6 And Jehovah called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know Jehovah, neither was the word of Jehovah yet revealed unto him. 8 And Jehovah called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And Eli perceived that Jehovah had called the child. 9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Jehovah; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And Jehovah came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel said, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

Summary

  1. Vs6 The Lord calls Samuel again, and again Samuel gets up goes to Eli and says "Here I am, you called?"

  1. What does Eli say? I didn't call you. Go back to bed and lay down.

This is the second time.

  1. Vs7 Samuel did not know God, neither was the word of God revealed to him yet.

  1. Odd verse? What might this mean?

  1. What does Samuel represent? The man-child of Rev 12 who is raised up to heaven?

  1. Yet in our natural picture of Samuel, he lives in God's temple on earth under the tutelage of the Eli ministry (who is either blind or greatly lost his sight).

  1. Who does the Eli ministry represent? The church!

  1. Notice who the Samuel ministry goes to the first two times that God calls him.

  1. He goes to Eli, the church because he thinks that is where the voice of God has come from.

  1. Or he thinks that it is where he should go to answer the call.

  1. What does the church (Eli) do to the man-child ministry (Samuel)?

  1. Tells him that he didn't call him

  1. Tells it go lay down again

  1. and tells him to go back to sleep

  1. Vs8 The Lord calls Samuel a third time. Again, Samuel responds to the voice of God by going to Eli.

  1. Eli perceives that the Lord is the one who is calling the child.

  1. Vs9 Eli tells Samuel to go lay down and if God calls again, say to him "Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth"

  1. So after the 3rd time that God spoke, Samuel finally came to the realization that it was God speaking to him and NOT Eli.

  1. Samuel lays down again and tells God to speak because now he is listening for HIS voice, not Eli's.

This is the third time.

Regarding Vs7:

Samuel (the man-child) begins to know the Lord AND the word of the Lord begins to be revealed to Samuel after the third time.

  1. Vs10 And the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Samuel answered, speak for thy servant heareth.

So after the 3rd time, Samuel recognizes God's voice and the word of God begins to be revealed to him. And now Samuel hears…

So how might we look at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd times? Might these equate with days or years?

Day 1 - First time

0-1000

Day 2 - Second time

1001-2000

Day 3 - Third time

2001-3000

Technically, when does each day begin? On the first day.

So the knowing of God AND the revealing of the word of God (Jesus), really begins after the third time but before the fourth time.

So we can extrapolate that the Samuel's (man-child ministry) learn about Jesus after the third time or beginning of the third spiritual day.

And they're understanding far surpasses the Eli's.

1 Sam 3:11-14

11 And Jehovah said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even unto the end. 13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse upon themselves, and he restrained them not. 14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

Summary

  1. Vs11 The assumption here is that after the third time Samuel heard God plainly and recognized his voice.

  1. Vs11 God tells Samuel,"I will execute my words in Israel, whoever hears it, both their ears will tingle.

Definition: to tingle (of ears), to quiver (of fear)

  1. 2Ki 21:12

therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Behold, I bring such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle.

  1. Jer 19:3

and say, Hear ye the word of Jehovah, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle.

  1. Hab 3:16

I heard, and my body trembled,  My lips quivered at the voice;  Rottenness entereth into my bones, and I tremble in my place;  Because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble,  For the coming up of the people that invadeth us.

Day of trouble?

  1. Psa 40:3

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, (Rev 14:3) (144,000) even praise unto our God:  Many shall see it, and fear,  And shall trust in Jehovah.

  1. Vs12 In that day, I will arise against Eli, all that I have spoken concerning his house. From the beginning to the end.

  1. In that day? 7th day

  1. Arise, perform, stand against Eli? Who does God judge on day 7? Babylon

  1. From the beginning to the end?

  1. Vs13 God says "I have told him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse upon themselves, and he restrained them not."

  1. Read Rev 18:2-5

  2. Read Rev 18:7-8

  3. Read Rev 18:21

  1. Vs14 The iniquity of Eli's family will not be atoned for by sacrifice or offerings forever.

  1. Jer 25:12

And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith Jehovah, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate for ever.

  1. Jer 25:33-38

33 And the slain of Jehovah shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the face of the ground. 34 Wail, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow in ashes, ye principal of the flock; for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are fully come, and ye shall fall like a goodly vessel. 35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. 36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the principal of the flock! for Jehovah layeth waste their pasture. 37 And the peaceable folds are brought to silence because of the fierce anger of Jehovah. 38 He hath left his covert, as the lion; for their land is become an astonishment because of the fierceness of the oppressing sword, and because of his fierce anger.

  1. Jer 50 and 51 also speak of the judgement of Babylon, Eli, the wayward church on the 7th day

  1. One other thing we can extrapolate from this is that it was God's intention to allow the Eli ministry to remain alive and functioning on Earth through the first two full days. And during the third day God's judgment occurs.

1 Sam 3:15-18

15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Jehovah. And Samuel feared to show Eli the vision. 16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he said, Here am I. 17 And he said, What is the thing that Jehovah hath spoken unto thee? I pray thee, hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide anything from me of all the things that he spake unto thee. 18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is Jehovah: let him do what seemeth him good.

Summary

  1. Vs15 Samuel lays down until the morning, and opened the door of the house of God

  1. Does Samuel stay in bed until morning?

  1. Or does the 7th day man-child/Samuel ministry remain still until the morning of day seven? Prob?

  1. Vs15 Samuel is afraid to tell Eli. Can you blame him? Wouldn't you?

  1. Vs16-17 Eli calls Samuel and asks him what God has spoken to him. He says "Please don’t conceal anything from me. May God do this to you and even more if you conceal from me one word of all that he spoke to you.”

  1. A little manipulative to say it this way to Samuel?

  1. Vs18 Samuel tells Eli everything. Ironically, Eli says “He is the LORD. May he do what seems good to him.”

1 Sam 3:19-21

19 And Samuel grew, and Jehovah was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Jehovah. 21 And Jehovah appeared again in Shiloh; for Jehovah revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Jehovah.
