Ten Days

 Ten days

2Th 1:3-5

3 We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, even as it is meet, for that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the love of each one of you all toward one another aboundeth; 4 so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which ye endure; 5 which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God; to the end that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

Dan 1:1-2

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.

Notice:

  1. In the 3rd year (after 2000 yrs)

  2. Babylon besieged Jerusalem

  3. King of Judah given into hand of king of Babylon

  4. Part of the vessels of God are carried into Shinar (Babylon), to the house of his god

Dan 1:3-5

3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles; 4 youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and endued with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king's palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king's dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they should stand before the king.

Ashpenaz - means " I will make prominent the sprinkled"

Dainties - meat or provision

Wine - doctrine, that which you get intoxicated on

Dan 1:6-8

6 Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 7 And the prince of the eunuchs gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego. 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Who has been hijacked by Babylon today?

-The leavened church

Who might Daniel and his three friends represent?

-bride? Unlike Rebekah, they are unable to leave Babylon

-Anyone seeking to not be spiritually defiled

Daniel seemed to realize that the king's wine and meat would defile him. Why?

-Prob against Jewish law

-Spiritually speaking, Babylon's wine & meat defile God's people today. Any examples?

  1. buying/selling

  2. sexually deprived

  3. Doctrines of demons

Dan 1:9-14

9 Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs. 10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king. 11 Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king's dainties; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. 14 So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

  1. At first Daniel requests the eunuch that he might not defile himself.

  2. The sympathetic eunuch  who likes Daniel is concerned about his own status/job/life from the king. The eunuch does not seem to want to do this.

  3. Daniel proposes a test to prove to the "steward" that his countenance would not be worse looking (sad, angry, wroth).

  4. Give US a "ten days" of herbs (veggies) and water. Sly.

  5. Do whatever seems fit as a result after "ten days". So the eunuch tested them.

Dan 1:15-17

15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths that did eat of the king's dainties. 16 So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse. 17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

After ten days, the four youths were:

  1. Good, pleasant, agreeable

  2. Plump (or firm) in body/skin/body

So the steward consented to giving them only herbs (veggies) and water.

Dan 1:18-21

18 And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm. 21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Vs 18 - How long had the king allotted for them to be nourished and trained by the eunuchs?

Vs 5 - says 3 years

Were Daniel and his three friends the only ones trained by the eunuchs? How do you know?

Vs 19 says "among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah"

Not only did the king found them ten times better in wisdom and understanding than all the other Jewish youths that stood before him, but better than ALL the magicians and enchanters in his entire realm.

Guess the king hired Daniel!

But we didn't discuss this verse. Verse 17...

17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

**Guess this is what God gives to his set apart bride who follows Him as best she is able despite the circumstances.

  1. Knowledge

  2. Skill in all learning

  3. Skill in all wisdom

  4. To Daniel, understanding in dreams and visions

What does "ten days" in Daniel 1 symbolize?

  • A testing of sorts of God's people to see if they will stand or continue in their walk with God by eating and drinking what he has set out for them to eat.

  • If so, He blesses them

Another instance of "ten days"

Rev 2:8-9

8 And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write:  These things saith the first and the last, who was dead, and lived again: 9 I know thy tribulation, and thy poverty (but thou art rich), and the blasphemy of them that say they are Jews, and they are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Smyrna - means myrrh

-Wise men have Jesus myrrh (Matt 2:11)

-Esther used myrrh for 6 months as a part of her beauty treatments. (Est 2:12) Myrrh not only brings nutrients for the skin, but has an emotional, balancing effect.

-It was also used in embalming.

Who is?

These things saith the first and the last, who was dead, and lived again:

-Jesus

Smyrna

  1. one of the seven churches in Rev

  2. Poverty

  3. Tribulation

  4. Rich altho hidden behind poverty and tribulation

  5. Prob living in a "time" with "Jews" who really are not "Jews" and these blaspheme.

  6. But really are a synagogue of Satan.

Who are Jews in NT?

Rom 2:28-29

28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh: 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Gal 6:15-16

15 For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. 16 And as many as shall walk by this rule, peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

(Note: Who is the Israel of God in the NT?)

Rev 2:10-11

10 Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life. 11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches. He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Ten Days

Seems to be a set period denoting suffering, trial (proving), and/or tribulation

If faithful, into death (or maybe "death" to self or flesh), a crown of life is given.

Crown of life

Jas 1:12

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.

Crown of righteousness

(Is this the same crown?)

2Ti 4:7-8

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: 8 henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

Comparison:

Dan 1 vs Church of Smyrna in Rev 2

  1. Both endured a period of "10 days"; testing, trial, proving

  2. If successful, receive blessings (knowledge, wisdom, skill in learning,  understanding in dreams/visions) or crown of life

What about James and Paul?

Re-read James 1:12 & 2Ti 4:7-8

Jas 1:12

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.

  1. Endured

  2. Approved?

  3. Receive crown of life

  4. Promised to them that "love him"

2Ti 4:5-8

5 But be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: 8 henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

  1. Fought and finished the course

  2. Kept the faith

  3. Crown of righteousness given

  4. Promised to those who "loved his appearing"

***Those that "loved his appearing"???

Strong's #2015 -epiphaneia -"epiphany,"

  • an appearing or appearance

  • From g2016, which is from g2014

What might this mean?

Appearing in the form of a trial?

Appearing in us after the trial?

Strong's #2014 -epiphaino

  • shine upon, that is, become (literally) visible or (figuratively) known: - appear, give light

***Those that "loved his appearing"???

Other examples of "-epiphaino"

Luk 1:79

To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death;  To guide our feet into the way of peace.

Tit 2:11-12

11 For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world;

*Grace of God "appeared" or "became visible", bringing salvation to all men?

Or is it only bringing salvation to those that see that "appearance"?

***AND if we see it, we apply vs12 to our life.

Continue…

Tit 2:13-14

13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works.

**Are we looking to the "appearing" of the God and Jesus for his second coming???

Or are we looking for his "appearing" in our life so we can allow him to actually do verse 14?

  1. Redeem us from all iniquity

  2. Purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works

Pauls words to a heavily persecuted and beaten up church at Thessalonica.

Looking back at Daniel..

Did Daniel and his friends have to endure more hardship even after their successful "ten days"?

  1. Lions den

  2. Fiery furnace

***Anything else from Dan?

Luk 1:79

To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death;  To guide our feet into the way of peace.
