John 16 - Double Portion of Overcomers

 Meaning of "Double Portion":

It's not simply about twice as much, but about inheriting the anointing and authority of the firstborn son, signifying a special blessing and God's favor.

Examples in the OT:

  1. Elisha: His request for a double portion was fulfilled, as he inherited Elijah's prophetic mantle and performed miracles.

  1. Job: God restored Job's fortunes, giving him twice as much as he had before his trials, which could be seen as a "double portion".

  1. Hannah: Elkanah, Hannah's husband, gave her a double portion of the sacrifice, recognizing her as a beloved wife, even though she was barren.

  1. Joseph: Joseph was given a double portion of inheritance from his father Jacob, due to his birthright as the firstborn.

In NT: Overcomers

The idea of receiving a double portion can be seen as a promise of abundant blessings for those who overcome challenges and remain faithful to God. And although we don't see it yet, we know it's coming at some point.

Last week we read from John 11 and how the double portion appears at the end of John 11 with Jesus taking his disciples to Ephraim.

As far as timing is concerned, John 11 suggests that the double portion is given out on the seventh day or on the day that Jesus comes back. The day of the Lord.

Joh 16:1-5

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble. 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. 3 And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

Joh 13:36

Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow afterwards.

John 16:6-11

6 But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. 8 And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; 11 of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.

Notice:

When the comforter has come (vs11), Jesus tells his disciples that they will behold him no more. In this passage, Jesus seems to describe the Holy Spirit as a completely separate entity.

Yet this is a little different than what he said two chapters earlier:

Joh 14:16-17

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever, 17 even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.18 I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also.

This is like a riddle. Sometimes Jesus equates himself with the Father, sometimes with the Holy Spirit yet at other times he speaks of himself as being separate from the Spirit and the Father.

John 16:12-15

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you. 15 All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

  1. Vs13 The holy Spirit guides you into all truth

  1. Vs13 The holy Spirit doesn't speak from himself

  1. Vs13 He only speaks the things he hears?? What does this mean?

    1. Only the spoken word??

  1. Vs13 The holy Spirit will declare the things that are to come

  1. Rev 19:10 And I fell down before his feet to worship him. And he saith unto me, See thou do it not: I am a fellow-servant with thee and with thy brethren that hold the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

  1. Vs14 The holy spirit will glorify Jesus

  1. Vs14 The holy spirit will take what belongs to Jesus and declare it unto us

  1. Vs15 all things the father has belong to Jesus. So he takes it and declares it unto you.

What is Jesus declaring in verse 15? That he and God are equal or that he is God.

Joh 16:16

A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.

***Remember in verse 10 Jesus says that when he goes to the father they won't see him anymore.

What might this mean?

  1. His death, burial, resurrection then reappearance?

  1. Jesus’ death and taken up to heaven in which they no longer physically see him, followed by the sending of the HS which enabled them to spiritually see Jesus?

  1. His going away which ushers in a period where Jesus is no longer seen until His second coming in which He will be seen again?

John 16:17-19

17 Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? 18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith. 19 Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

In fairness to the disciples, Jesus does sometimes say that they will still see him after he goes to the father so it is certainly a fair question.

A little while?

John 16:20-22

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world. 22 And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.

Vs20 Disciples shall:

  1. Weep and lament, I guess when Jesus goes to the father?

Vs20 The world shall:

  1. Rejoice

Vs20 The disciples shall:

  1. Be sorrowful

  1. But sorrow is turned into joy

A woman…

Vs21 The sorrowful disciples are compared to:

  1. a woman in travail w child

  2. Her hour is come

Vs21 When the woman /disciples finally gives birth:

  1. The woman/disciples don't remember the pain

  1. The woman /disciples has joy that a MAN is delivered into the world

  1. Who is the baby that the woman/disciples will travailed and birthed?

  1. The church? Did disciples birth the church?

    1. The church was birth in the book of Acts 2:1-4 at Pentecost.

  1. Didn't Jesus say that the holy Spirit would tell them of things that are to come? Prophecy

  1. And why would Jesus be comparing the disciples/woman to an event that had happened already in the past?

  1. Nevertheless the disciples/woman group have incredible joy at this birth.

  1. Is there a woman in the NT who gives birth to a baby in pain and then finally joy?

  1. Mary? Not sure if the travail she endures is emphasized but she births Jesus.

  1. Woman in Rev 12.

  1. Rev 12:1-2

1 And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was with child; and she crieth out, travailing in birth, and in pain to be delivered.

  1. Rev 12:5

And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne.

  1. Who rules all nations with a rod of iron?

  1. Rev 2:26-27

26 And he that overcometh, and he that keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give authority over the nations: 27 and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to shivers; as I also have received of my Father:

So we see in Revelation 12 a picture of the disciples birthing the overcomers who rules the nations with a rod of iron.

Just like we saw last week how Jesus takes his disciples to Ephraim in John 11, and how this event occurs after the raising up of the Dead/sleeping church after Jesus has stayed away 2 days…

And again we see here how Jesus very very subtly connects the future overcomer as being birthed out of his disciples sometime in the future.

John 16:23

And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.

In that day

  1. Which day is this? (The seventh day, or the third day, or the day of the Lord, or the day of Jesus's return)

  1. Why will they ask no questions in that day? Because they know the will of the father and he is speaking to the double portion overcomer of the 7th Day who walks very closely with God and knows his will.

John 16:24-25

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full. 25 These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.

Why did Jesus speak in dark sayings (parables) to his disciples in this instance? I thought he only spoke dark sayings or parables to the multitude?

Joh 16:26

26 In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you; 27 for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father. 28 I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.

Vs26 What does this mean?

John 16:26 CLV In that day you will be requesting in My name, and I am not saying to you that I shall be asking the Father concerning you,

Is Jesus suggesting in Vs26 that on the day of the Lord, day 7, that you can pray to him directly? And because he has gone back to the father, is he suggesting on that day he is God?

Is the point that he is not needing to go to the father on that day? Because he will be one with God? In essence God?

Vs28 I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.

Is his point that his essence is from the father and when he goes back his essence goes back to the father?

Therefore when he comes back to Earth on the 7th Day, he is God?

There are other instances of this occurring:

Joh 14:20

In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

Joh 7:37-38

37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.

Rev 21:2-3 ASV 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of the throne saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he shall dwell with them, and they shall be his peoples, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God:

John 16:29-31

29His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying. 30 Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. 31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

Oh do you really believe now?? 😁\

John 16:32-33

32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33 These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
